Utes obtain perfection

By By Natalie Dicou and By Natalie Dicou March 9, 2008
Only UNLV stood between the U women's basketball team and an undefeated Mountain West Conference season, although the Rebels didn't set up any big hurdles. The No. 15 Utes (27-3, 16-0 MWC) started the game out at an electrifying pace and ran right over UNLV (8-20, 4-11 MWC) early in the contest after jumping out to a 21-4 lead.

Men’s Hoops: Runnin’ Utes face toughy UNLV in Vegas before MWC Tourney

By and March 9, 2008
The madness that is March in college basketball will be cranked up an extra notch for the Runnin' Utes this weekend. All they need to do is win to make it all work out in their favor. That's easier said than done considering the who and the where involved.

Men’s Hoops: Utes have to settle with No. 6 seed after loss to UNLV

By and March 9, 2008
The prospect of a better seeding for UNLV in next week's MWC tournament wasn't on the line as it was for Utah on Saturday, but the Rebels played like there was anyway, and it might turn out working in their favor. Curtis Martin had 22 points, 10 assists and five rebounds as UNLV beat the U men's basketball team 70-63 at the site of next week's conference championship.

Gymnastics: Despite wobbles, Utah beat Oregon State

By By Jon Gilbert and By Jon Gilbert March 8, 2008
If the U gymnastics team was in a slumber going into its meet against Oregon State Friday night, its performance served as a blaring alarm. Second-ranked Utah (10-0) managed to defeat the No. 7 Beavers (9-3) by a score of 196.300 to 195.150 in the Huntsman Center despite two falls by Ashley Postell, the nation's top all-around performer, and plenty of other miscues.

A story that revolves around women and puts out strong messages without being preachy or overly feminist -- that's how Actor Training Program sophomore Gabrielle Gaston, who is also an advice columnist for The Daily Utah Chronicle, describes the play "Top Girls.

The Word (3/5): Chronicle’s guide to the SLC music scene

By By Makena Walsh and By Makena Walsh March 7, 2008
Electronica's bad boys Holy F*** create improvisational electronic music -- without employing the genre's staple use of loops, splicing and programming. This innovative approach to a dynamic genre has boded well for the Canadian duo, who managed to fill spots at Vegoose, Coachella (where they supported Brooklyn rapper Beans) and SXSW -- not to mention opening for Buck 65 on the European leg of his "Secret House Against The World" tour.

The Drop (3/5): Chronicle’s guide for the music store

By and March 7, 2008
Metal's recent mainstream success has unleashed a flood of At The Gates carbon-copies into the heavy music scene -- gravely vocals, soaring Maiden-melodies, punishing distortion and all. Minnesotans The Body Beneath manage to steer clear of the cliches through mathematical technicality and uncompromising sonic assault in the vein of tech-metal legends Suffocation and recent scene-stars The Red Chord -- an excruciatingly pleasant departure from the masses.

MWC Power Rankings (3/7)

By By Cody Brunner and By Cody Brunner March 7, 2008
1. BYU (23-6, 12-2) Up next: TCU 3/8 After a win over Utah on Saturday, Wyoming forward Joseph Taylor called out BYU center Trent Plaisted, saying he was "coming for him." Plaisted's response to Taylor was a 23-point, 11-rebound effort on Wednesday night, and the Cougars blasted the Cowboys, 78-61.

Cinderella belts the tunes

By By Christie Franke and By Christie Franke March 7, 2008
Everyone knows the story of Cinderella. Everyone, regardless of race, creed or culture. Look in any culture and you will inevitably find the fairy tale masquerading under that culture's norms, but Cinderella nonetheless. Cinderella is one of those wacky tales that can be as gory as a horror flick (see www.
