Research funding: U grants freedom for professors’ research

Fewer research grants are available for professors of qualitative studies, such as the humanities or the arts, than for those in the sciences, but that doesn't exempt these faculty members from having to do research. Even though studies such as humanities and the arts have fewer foundations set up for them, they rarely have to worry about rejection on the grounds of asking for too much money, said English professor Vincent Cheng, who researches 20th-century English, British and Irish literature.

The work of Brian McPherson, one of the U's top Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative researchers, might help put a stop to global warming. After completing his doctoral work at the U, McPherson left for New Mexico to continue research. Ten years later, McPherson is back at the U, working with carbon dioxide.

Kosovo independence not ‘happy ending,’ former diplomat says

Even though most of Kosovo's residents celebrated the country's independence last week, the region's break from Serbia and Russia is not a guarantee of "a picture-perfect happy ending." Instead, William Montgomery, a former ambassador to the region, said Kosovo's newfound freedom is an increasingly complicated situation that is going to require communication and compromise.

Although federal research grant money is a critical resource for the U, helping to attract and maintain high-quality faculty such as Nobel-prize winner Mario Capecchi, grant money at the U has not increased as significantly in recent years as it did in the 1990s, according to the U's Office of Budget and Institutional Analysis.

Bill to conceal names of animal researchers passes

The Utah House of Representatives passed a bill to conceal the names, personal addresses and phone numbers of U animal researchers. The bill, which passed unanimously Feb. 22 and the Senate president signed on Monday, would modify the Government Records Access and Management Act to classify personal information of researchers who do medical or scientific research on animals at Utah colleges and universities as protected documents.

U ranked for high web presence

The U's worldwide Internet presence ranking went up two places this year. The U ranked 48th out of more than 5,000 universities included in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities. Universities are ranked based on several factors including the number of pages on a school's website and how many scholarly publications are collected on the Google Scholar database.
