Gymnastics: Laughs get Kim through

By By Jon Gilbert February 21, 2008
Nina Kim was right where she wanted to be. The U gymnast trained all off-season long and refocused herself to compete all-around for her team. On Feb. 1 against Minnesota, she did that brilliantly. Her breakout performance launched her to No.1 in the country in the all-around competition.

Men’s Hoops: Cougars bring too much versatility

By By Chris Kamrani February 21, 2008
The Runnin' Utes learned the hard way on Wednesday night that when you play the BYU Cougars, you truly must pick your poison. On a night when the Ute defense was stellar as can be, the Cougars responded with two different heroes from usual. Rather than BYU star center Trent Plaisted and the all-around game of forward Lee Cummard, the Utes saw their fortunes go south once forward Jonathan Tavernari and freshman point guard Jimmer Fredette started feeling it.

Service Learning at the U: Honors College values service

By By Edgar Zuniga Jr. February 20, 2008
The Honors College is holding a book drive with bins placed around campus to collect books with elementary through high school reading levels for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salt Lake. Students from the college are also organizing a program with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah to mentor students at Rose Park Elementary School.

Service Learning at the U: Bennion Center student projects

February 20, 2008
When Jordan Barker walked into the Bennion Community Service Center more than two years ago, he expected to get volunteer hours for his graduate school application. He didn't plan on organizing a student-directed program where volunteers would baby-sit 15 to 20 children once a week.

Letter: Clarifying some points on the RHA

February 20, 2008
Editor: I would first like to compliment and commend Lana Groves on her dedication to reporting. Groves' interest to cover the Residence Halls area is greatly appreciated. Service Learning at the U: The house that service built

By By Clayton Norlen February 20, 2008
Unlike many of the houses in Officer's Circle that focus on academics, the Lowell Bennion Service House isn't focused on the sciences, humanities or law. Instead, the residents living in the house share a love for service and bettering their community that goes beyond academics.

Class will examine health care system

By By Edgar Zuniga Jr. February 20, 2008
With the presidential primaries in full swing, much attention is being paid to health care in America. Some candidates favor bolstering the nation's private health care system, but others want to see a universal government-assisted program. A new course, titled "Health Care in America: Past, Present and Future," offered at the U Fall Semester 2008, will examine these issues along with the medical, legal, economic, political and ethical aspects of health care.

Sewell: Get down! It’s a shootout!

By By James Sewell February 20, 2008
After yet another school shooting incident -- the ninth in a series of violent school incidents stretching back to Columbine -- I feel compelled to speak out. Our educational institutions, from kindergartens through graduate schools, are supposed to be places of intellectual freedom and exploration -- places where our minds are free to wander.

Women’s Hoops: Utes send Cougars home limping

By By Cody Brunner February 20, 2008
Night and day is about the only way to describe the difference between the first and second half of Tuesday night's women's basketball game between in-state rivals BYU and Utah. After trading 3-pointers and keeping it close throughout the first half, the Utes blew the game wide open in the second half, outscoring their rivals 47-19 and leaving the Huntsman Center with an 82-45 victory for their 17th consecutive win.

Service Learning at the U: Scholars find unique service projects

By By Ryan Shelton February 20, 2008
A devoted group of students in the Service Learning Scholars Program at the U is actively reshaping the traditional notion of service work. Giang Tran recorded the life stories of the terminally ill as a keepsake for their families. Elise Dumke-Miller taught creative dance to grade school students and organized an annual Halloween trick-or-treating event at the U for disabled children.
