U to honor distinguished alumni

Nobel Laureate Mario Capecchi and four U alumni are being recognized as distinguished and honorary alumni by the U's Alumni Association. Members of the association and faculty selected recipients for the Distinguished Alumni Award. The award is given in recognition of Founders Day on Feb.

Employee sues U after termination

A former accountant in the U physics department filed a lawsuit against the U claiming she was terminated because of her sexual orientation and appearance, and because she cared for animals instead of children at her home. Heidi Borjesson said her supervisor helped an employee, who had worked at the U for a shorter amount of time, obtain a promotion after it was announced that the physics department would reduce the size of its staff, according to the civil lawsuit filed in 3rd District Court.

Graduation Guarantee gains support

ASUU's Graduation Guarantee advising plan is moving forward after receiving recent stamps of approval from the Academic Senate, Board of Trustees and a number of colleges on campus. The program, which pushes students toward graduation in a timely manner through regular academic advising, will start Fall Semester 2008, depending on the implementation of a new university degree audit reporting system.

Journalist ‘not optimistic’ about Middle East

When he was in power, Saddam Hussein threw extravagant birthday parties every year and invited foreign journalists, such as Ethan Bronner, to watch the "poets" of Iraq sing verses of praise to their dictator. These events were some of the only times American journalists were openly welcomed to Iraq.

Students help Chinese separated by storms

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association at the U is raising money to connect families that have been separated by unusual snowstorms in China. The association has raised about $8,500 since Feb. 2 and has received a $2,000 pledge from a U professor. The group will donate the funds to the Red Cross Society of China, which will help those who have lost electricity and access to transportation in 17 provinces.
