Women’s Hoops: Whip it good

Kalee Whipple, the U women's basketball team's starting small forward, won't be offended if you tell her you've never heard of her hometown of Hiko, Nev. No one's heard of it. In fact, it's described as a "semi-ghost town" on Wikipedia.com. "If you go north of Vegas for a hundred miles, you'll just randomly run into (it)," said the sophomore.

U softball team looks to defend undefeated record The Utah softball team will put its perfect 5-0 record to the test this weekend as it heads to Arizona for the Kajikawa Classic. Headlining the competition in the desert this weekend will be No. 25 Oregon State, Western Michigan, Texas Tech and Notre Dame.

Nobel Laureate Mario Capecchi and four U alumni are being recognized as distinguished and honorary alumni by the U's Alumni Association. Members of the association and faculty selected recipients for the Distinguished Alumni Award. The award is given in recognition of Founders Day on Feb.

Free HIV testing offered

The U Office of Health Promotion will offer students free HIV screenings today. "Since Valentine's Day falls into Sexual Responsibility Week, we thought it appropriate to offer our students free HIV screenings to make sure they are healthy and not passing on the virus to others," said Elizabeth Craig, health educator at the U Health Center, which also offers a variety of other services including STD/STI testing for less than $30.

Employee sues U after termination

A former accountant in the U physics department filed a lawsuit against the U claiming she was terminated because of her sexual orientation and appearance, and because she cared for animals instead of children at her home. Heidi Borjesson said her supervisor helped an employee, who had worked at the U for a shorter amount of time, obtain a promotion after it was announced that the physics department would reduce the size of its staff, according to the civil lawsuit filed in 3rd District Court.

Journalist ‘not optimistic’ about Middle East

When he was in power, Saddam Hussein threw extravagant birthday parties every year and invited foreign journalists, such as Ethan Bronner, to watch the "poets" of Iraq sing verses of praise to their dictator. These events were some of the only times American journalists were openly welcomed to Iraq.
