U alumnus Monson named LDS President

Thomas S. Monson was named the new president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during a press conference in the Church Administration Building on Monday. Monson is the successor to Gordon B. Hinckley, who died Jan. 27 from natural causes. Monson's appointment continues the tradition of U students and graduates being among the leadership in the church.

Niedrich: Year round schools are the way to go

On Jan. 22, Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr. delivered the 2008 State of the State address. In his address, the governor spoke of Utah's need to "aspire to reach higher" in education and other areas. Gov. Huntsman addressed several problem areas of our state's education system, including unqualified or bad teachers remaining in schools, the inefficient non-use of education resources throughout the summer months, inadequate teacher compensation, a growing teacher shortage, a lack of options for students to "remediate or accelerate their studies," and "way too many standardized tests, with little information flowing back.

Spork Party fails to recruit full ticket

When the filing deadline for Senate and General Assembly candidates running in ASUU elections expired Feb. 1, the Spork Party was left three candidates short of a full ticket. Candidates from previous elections said that Spork's empty seats could mean the party will face an uphill battle against the Focus Party.

U Democrats endorse Clinton

The U's chapter of the College Democrats voted last week to endorse Hillary Clinton for president. Oakley Gordon, the club's president, said the dozen or so Democratic students who attended the club's meeting last week voted to support Clinton by a 2-to-1 margin.
