History predicts Lobos’ victory

The New Mexico football team seems to have broken down its schedule into a four-game pattern. After losing their season opener to Texas-El Paso 10-6, the Lobos rebounded with three straight victories. The second interval began with a loss to BYU in New Mexico's conference opener.

Will the Utes be able to contain one of the most prolific offenses in the Mountain West Conference? Utah comes into the game against New Mexico with a highly touted defense that ranks 18th in the nation in total yards allowed per game (313.0). The Utes have been particularly tough defending against the run as of late, holding opposing teams to an average of 70.

Senior sendoff

U volleyball head coach Beth Launiere said if any person can finish a four-year degree while being a student athlete, he or she should be congratulated. Whitney Webb, Kate Robison, Hillary Taylor and Connie Dangerfield will receive that honor as they set to play in the last two home matches of their careers this weekend on Crimson Court.

Putting the T in LGBT

Last week, the House of Representatives passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a bill that supporters have called a landmark in civil rights legislation and have even compared to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The bill grants broad protection against discrimination in the workplace for gays, lesbians and bisexuals on a federal level.

Women’s hoops wins opener

The women's edition of the Runnin' Utes are off and running. Utah demolished UC Irvine, 91-50, in its season opener in a game that more closely resembled an exhibition game than a typical regular-season matchup. The Utes' performance had a mid-season quality to it.

Financial Literacy for students

To help increase women's graduation rates, U faculty members created a subcommittee of Safe Passage, the peer mentoring program, several weeks ago. Safe Passage members include Theresa Martinez, assistant vice president of the sociology department; Debra Daniels, director of the Women's Resource Center; Kim Hall, WRC coordinator; and Karla Motta, associate vice president for enrollment management.

Building to house USTAR researchers

In a step toward jump-starting a new statewide effort to encourage technology research, the U opened its recently purchased BRAIN Institute Building to temporarily house new researchers. Faculty celebrated the opening of the new building in Research Park last night, which will function as a temporary facility for faculty hired under the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative.

International week encourages global education
