U’s Science Day recruits high schoolers

November 12, 2007
The U wants more students to major in science-even if it means they have to lecture high school students about it on the weekend. Hundreds of parents and students from as far away as Missouri came to the U last weekend to learn about science degrees offered on campus.

Volleyball stands up after BYU loss

November 12, 2007
PROVO -- There is a old Japanese proverb: "Fall down seven times, stand up eight." The U volleyball team fell Friday night to BYU, 3-0, giving the Cougars their first regular season sweep since 1999. Fifteen minutes after the game, Utah was in the process of standing itself back up.

Cowboys learn lesson

November 12, 2007
Being that the U is an institution of higher education, it makes me feel good to know that somebody learned something from Utah's 50-0 romp over Wyoming. The pupil: Wyoming head coach Joe Glenn. The lesson: Don't guarantee victory. It's usually never a good idea to guarantee victory, but it is a particularly bad idea when your opponent is playing at home, riding a five-game winning streak, coming off a bye week and playing about as well as anyone in the Mountain West Conference.

Research complex could replace golf course

November 12, 2007
The U's nine-hole golf course might be bulldozed to make space for a new technology research complex. Although the plans for building a new research facility on campus to house the state's Utah Science Technology and Research program are still being debated, USTAR officials discussed possible plans and costs for building on the golf course at a meeting last week.

Kirilenko looks like the AK of old

By By Jason Peterson November 12, 2007
Andrei Kirilenko is playing like a man possessed. More accurately, the Utah Jazz forward is playing to remind Jazz brass and fans that he's still the same lanky, disruptive force they drafted in '99. Kirilenko led the Jazz (5-2) to victory in Seattle on Friday night, 103-101, and another at home Saturday against Memphis, 118-94.

Zion curtain’ should cover everything offensive

By By Nicholas Pappas November 12, 2007
Dear Daily Utah Chronicle, I thought I was safe. I live in a beautiful community in West Jordan. The houses fit together like puzzle pieces. When I enjoy a day of scrapbooking in a neighbor's home, it's nice to know the layout is no different from my own. Diversity is the devil's work.

Utes hit the ground running

By By Chris Kamrani November 12, 2007
For those of you who expect to see a strictly set-up offense and a defense that just waits for the ball to go through the net, don't count on getting what you counted on with the U basketball team this season. Utah used stringent defense and a solid transition attack to run away with the first win of head coach Jim Boylen's tenure 86-52 over South Carolina-Upstate.

Joe don’t know Utah

By By Cody Brunner November 12, 2007
If Wyoming head coach Joe Glenn learned anything from this week, it was probably not to guarantee a victory. Especially when playing against a red-hot Utah team that had won five games straight and was fresh off a bye week. Glenn's guarantee and the Cowboys both proved null on Saturday, and the Utes walked off the field at Rice-Eccles Stadium with a convincing victory, 50-0.

Lumen sheds light on religious issues

By By Edgar Zuniga Jr. November 12, 2007
Politics. Diversity. Gay and lesbian pastors. A handful of students gathered at St. Paul's Episcopal Church last Thursday to discuss these controversial issues revolving around religious faith. The students meet several times a week as part of the student group Lumen: A Welcoming Student Ministry.

Martini to serve as elections registrar

By By Rochelle McConkie November 12, 2007
ASUU leaders recently appointed student government veteran Dave Martini to serve as the elections registrar for the 2007-2008 school year, marking the start of the election process. The elections registrar is charged with overseeing and regulating all student government elections.
