With playoffs unlikely, Real looks ahead

Real Salt Lake was unable to claim victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday night, possibly sealing RSL's fate to an early off-season and no playoffs for a third straight year. But, it was evident that Real had its eyes focused on its future before the game even started.

Theatre department welcomes graffiti

Salt Lake City artist Brody Froelich gets paid to spraypaint, but unlike most of his projects, his latest gig brings his graffiti to the indoor walls of a state institution. "The goal is to make the (Performing Arts Building) look completely different from what it did -- in other words, not the hole that it was before," said actor training program junior Eb Madson, special events chair to the theater department's Student Advisory Committee.

Gus Van Sant, perhaps best known for his role as director of "Good Will Hunting," first made his name exploring themes of sexuality and rebellion in "My Own Private Idaho." With his newest project, it seems that Van Sant is making a return to those same themes and even that same state.

Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema said it. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham reenforced it. UNLV head coach Mike Sanford believes it. UNLV is a different team, and more importantly, an improved team. Despite praises from fellow coaches, the Rebels (1-2) have the same record as UNLV.

University Singers world-class

The University Singers are world-renowned. No joke. The choir, directed by Brady R. Allred, won the European Grand Prix International Choral Competition last year in Tolosa, Spain. This followed a slew of other prizes, including the Grand Prize at the 2005 Florilge Vocal de Tours international Choir Competition in Tours, France (They also won five additional prizes there, including first in free program and second in mixed choir).

The Brave One’ is weak

"The Brave One" is not a revenge movie...or maybe it is. Or maybe it is, but shouldn't be. Maybe it doesn't know. The tonal approach director Neil Jordan tries to take says one thing, but the plot outline he's hampered by says quite another. This is a film that wants to be a thoughtful rumination on fear and identity, but which eventually can only express itself as an action thriller.

Garrott, Saxton differ on downtown

Luke Garrott and Nancy Saxton both self identify as progressive Democrats, but a common ideology doesn't keep the two Salt Lake City Council candidates from sparring over specifics. The two candidates running for the District 4 council seat similarly stressed the need to revitalize downtown, expand mass transit and create affordable housing during a forum at the Hinckley Institute of Politics on Thursday.

$1.5 million grant awarded to U professor

With the help of a new research grant, U professor Jody Rosenblatt will study early prevention of the spread of tumors. At an award ceremony in Maryland, Rosenblatt and 28 other recipients were presented with the Innovator Award. The grant offers $1.5 million over five years to each of the recipients who were specifically chosen for "new and innovative research methods.
