The Juice ain’t loose

By By Cody Brunner September 20, 2007
I was a huge fan of O.J. Simpson. His on-field football ability at USC and with the Buffalo Bills was second only to Barry Sanders. He was the first back to rush for more than 2,000 yards. I remember watching him on ESPN replays. The way he bounced off punishing hits and juked his way through defenses could bring tears to a grown man's eyes.

Student paints through struggles

By By Carlos Mayorga September 20, 2007
As a young girl in Peru, Ana Maria Ravines de Schur immersed herself in classic literature and painting. "Before I started reading and writing, I was painting," she said reminiscing over her childhood fascination with Rembrandt, Michelangelo and Da Vinci.

Low profile match has high stakes for RSL

By By Jon Gilbert September 19, 2007
Tonight's match between Real Salt Lake and the Los Angeles Galaxy is likely an afterthought to the rest of the MLS community. The two clubs round out the bottom of the Western Conference -- and the MLS standings for that matter -- and seem to be non-factors in the playoff hunt.

Letter: Have you heard about the Duke lacrosse team?

September 19, 2007
Editor: I just read Nicholas Pappas's column "Stand up for the Jena six" (Sept. 14) and while it's a very good column, one little "fact" Pappas uses to outline the dichotomy of justice between black and white students is absolutely wrong. Pappas claims that the Duke lacrosse team "allegedly raped a prostitute and got away with it.

Great Debate: Utes accomplish greatest upset in (gambling) history

September 19, 2007
I won't make the argument that Utah is worse than Appalachian State, or that UCLA is better than Michigan -- although I think both statements aren't far from the truth. No, sir. I'm perfectly willing to concede that Appalachian State's 34-32 outright victory over the Wolverines was more unlikely than Utah's 44-6 demolishing of the Bruins.

Great Debate: Appalachian State owns the biggest upset ever

By By Jason Peterson September 19, 2007
Let's take a poll. How many of you know where Appalachian State University is located? If you just muttered under your breath, "Boone, N.C.," you're either a freak of nature or, more likely, you heard about the tiny school's upset of the century over the Michigan Wolverines.

Getting to med school

September 19, 2007
Like hundreds of other students at the U considering medical school, Shane Hawthorne wasn't sure what the U Medical School would expect of him when it was time to apply. "The U medical school admission requirements are some of the most stringent in the nation -- many students don't know what the U is looking for," said Hawthorne, a junior in biology.

The fresh maker

September 19, 2007
The U volleyball team is going through a dry spell that is uncharacteristic for a Beth Launiere-led team within the last decade. But Launiere's response to her team's losing funk is one that has typified her tenure as the head coach of the Utes. Ask anyone who is a part of the U volleyball team and he or she will admit there are immediate things the Utes can and need to work on.

Letter: Curvin is a kook

September 19, 2007
Editor: This is in response to Chad Curvin's letter ("Mass transit is annoying," Sept. 14). First, it is abundantly clear that he is blind to the people who take advantage of UTA. I encourage him to spend a day watching the stadium TRAX station and count the droves of people using it.

The Quixotic nature of American politics

By By Steve Coons September 19, 2007
Whether mistaking one solitary windmill as the solution to the global energy crisis, or declaring war against steroids in an attempt to fight terrorism, the modern American politician inevitably bears a strong resemblance to Don Quixote de la Mancha. The difference is that Don Quixote was more than willing to simply blame a wizard for any misstep.
