Low profile match has high stakes for RSL

By By Jon Gilbert September 19, 2007
Tonight's match between Real Salt Lake and the Los Angeles Galaxy is likely an afterthought to the rest of the MLS community. The two clubs round out the bottom of the Western Conference -- and the MLS standings for that matter -- and seem to be non-factors in the playoff hunt.

Hands behind the U: Employees say wages too low

September 19, 2007
Finding employees to repair sprinkler lines, mow lawns or tend gardens on campus hasn't been easy for Sue Pope. Pope, who supervises the U's grounds workers and heavy machinery operators, said low wages are making the U an unattractive employer. Because competitors can pay laborers more, Pope finds it hard to recruit and retain people to perform labor-intensive tasks. "I've had positions that have been open for a year that I haven't been able to fill," Pope said. She said there are currently five or six open positions on her staff.

It's noon. The peak of high traffic at lunchtime and lines of hungry students start to form in the Union Food Court. Nicole Flynn, who has been a cashier there for a little more than a year, wipes her hair from her face and checks food prices, swiping cards -- both credit and UCards -- for customer after customer with a machine-like accuracy.

By By Tina Siu September 19, 2007
Life is too complex to have been created by chance. This was the overall idea Abdullah Yusuf Ali, a Muslim chemist, conveyed during a discussion and film presentation about the Islamic perspective on creationism, hosted by the Muslim Students Association of the University of Utah.

Study finds antioxidants can spur heart disease

September 19, 2007
For years, people have believed that antioxidants are important to combating heart disease, but a new study performed by U researchers discovered that increased levels of a specific antioxidant can actually encourage the disease. "Our study was performed to determine the cause of an inherited form of heart disease -- we found that it led to an abnormal increase of an antioxidant called glutathione," said Ivor Benjamin, a U professor in cardiology and the study's principal author.

Hands behind the U: Cleaner keeps Residence Halls looking nice

September 19, 2007
As students leave the Sage Point Residence Halls early morning heading to class after a weekend reprieve, a woman walks along pushing a cart full of cleaning products, ready to start her day. Ofelia Ortega moved to Salt Lake City from Zacatecas, Mexico, five years ago and has worked as a custodian at the U for the past three years.
