Corbin Louks subbing in at quarterback. Darrell Mack rushing for more than 100 yards. Tommy Grady throwing three passing touchdowns. Many Ute fans left Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday in a state of bewilderment after the Utah offense used trickery and some brilliant execution to compile 44 points against the Bruins.

Volleyball drops two on the road

By and September 17, 2007
Last year, the U volleyball team found it easy to experience the thrill of a win on a consistent basis, especially in conference play. This year, not so much. The Utes dropped their second consecutive MWC decision on the road against UNLV on Saturday by a familiar 3-1 score.

Not too many people knew who Robert Johnson was before Saturday's game against UCLA. After the game, however, the name might strike a chord. The sophomore intercepted two passes and forced a crucial fumble at the two-yard line to aid the Utes in a shocking 44-6 upset over No. 11 UCLA at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

After the Air Force loss -- just when it seemed like the Utes' football team was on the verge of unraveling -- linebacker Joe Jiannoni told the press that the Utes could still go 10-2 and that they would find a way to beat UCLA. The press conference went silent.

Jockeying for field position

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham called his team's 44-6 win over UCLA "one of the biggest, if not the biggest" home victories he's ever seen. Whittingham wasn't simply talking about the score or the magnitude of the victory. The U football team dominated the Bruins in every facet of the game, but what best sums up the Utes' superiority on Saturday was the way Utah's special teams lived up to their name -- particularly the "special" part.

Professor passionate about snow

Thomas Painter has had his 100th birthday planned for a couple of years now. He can see it so clearly in his mind you would think he is describing something that has already happened. "There's that ideal spot or vision in your mind where you go (on your 100th birthday); mine has always been set in the spring, with clear skies interacting with the snow," Painter, a professor in the geography department, said.

Real Salt Lake fought through being a man down for more than a half and escaped Toronto one point richer. RSL extended Toronto FC's MLS-record scoreless streak to 822 minutes with a 0-0 draw Saturday night. RSL's Fabian Espindola was sent off in the 35th minute for introducing his elbow to the face of Toronto defender Marvell Wynne.

Soccer team double dips at home

By By Natalie Dicou and By Natalie Dicou September 17, 2007
Just when Idaho State seemed poised to avenge its loss to the U women's soccer team in last year's NCAA tournament, the Bengals found themselves reliving the nightmare that's been haunting them since November. Just like in the tournament match on Nov. 9, 2006, the Utes trailed Idaho State 2-1 Friday but tied the game on a controversial goal in the final minutes to force overtime.
