Letter: Auto exhaust more harmful than cigarette smoke

By and September 14, 2007
Editor: The U should leave the cigarette smokers alone and stop pandering to the lies and fabrications of the anti-tobacco jihadists. We get it -- you don't like smoking. So what? There are plenty of things people don't like. That doesn't give the U the right to exclude these people from the federally protected activity of attending school.

Letter: Turkish professor misrepresented

By and September 14, 2007
Editor: My name along with a quote appears on your story about professor Olson's talk at the U on Kurdish nationalism. Although I did talk to your reporter on Sept. 6 after the conference, I have neither agreed to the possibility of a Kurdish political entity within the borders of Turkey (but not in Iraq), nor am I an expert on the topic (I never spoke at the event and your reporter found me on a bench!).

Volleyball loses MWC opener

By and September 14, 2007
The last time the U volleyball team lost a regular-season Mountain West Conference match to San Diego State in Peterson Gym was Nov. 19, 2005. Thursday, the Utes saw their 16-game regular-season streak come to an end in the same gym, as the Aztecs defeated the Utes 3-1.

Life of Brian: Stuck on the sideline

By By Cody Brunner and By Cody Brunner September 14, 2007
If anyone can lament the 20-12 loss to Air Force, it's Brian Johnson. The dual-threat quarterback would have likely been the difference in the game had he played, but instead, he had to watch from the sidelines as the Utes struggled to move the ball. Johnson's replacement, senior Tommy Grady, had trouble adjusting to the speed of the game having played nothing more than spot duty before Johnson's injury.

Hispanic business foundation gives scholarship

By By Edgar Zuniga Jr. and By Edgar Zuniga Jr. September 14, 2007
The Utah Hispanic Business Leadership Foundation is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship. Current and prospective college students of Hispanic/Latino descent have the opportunity to apply for both a scholarship valid at any institution and a four-year scholarship to the U.

Make a change for the Jena Six

By By Nicholas Pappas and By Nicholas Pappas September 14, 2007
OK, students. Raise your hands if you've heard of the Jena Six. I'll give you a hint: it's not the newest boy band producing popcorn punk. Still don't know? Let's try another route. Have you heard of the Duke lacrosse team? I'm sure you have. They were the rowdy stick-wielders who allegedly raped a prostitute and got away with it.

UCLA features a bruising run game

By By Jason Peterson and By Jason Peterson September 14, 2007
At Monday's press conference, someone asked Utah coach Kyle Whittingham for his thoughts on upcoming opponent UCLA and quarterback Ben Olson. "We remember him from last year," he said. That memory, a painful one for the Utes hoping to steal a win from the Bruins -- ranked No.

Game Guide: The Edge

By and September 14, 2007
Quarterback UCLA junior Ben Olson returns to the Bruins this year after suffering a season-ending knee injury just five games into the 2006 campaign. Olson has been Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to this point, throwing for 286 yards and five touchdowns against Stanford, then following it with a 126 yard, one interception game against BYU last week.

Religious studies gaining popularity

By By Parker Williams and By Parker Williams September 14, 2007
Collin Hafen's interest in religion began when he was young. He always enjoyed learning about religion, but didn't know how to convert his interest to a college degree. After investigating what options were available, Hafen said it was "very discouraging" to discover the U didn't offer a religious studies major.

Letter: Automatic weapons don’t kill deer, people do

By and September 14, 2007
Editor: Everyone knows that Brent Tenney has the right to bear arms ("Gun display was well thought-out," Sept. 11). I would just like to commend Tenney's group. You are a true hero for having the guts to display automatic weapon replicas to a college campus like Virginia Tech situated near Trolley Square.
