In Depth: Miles from home

By By Ana Breton September 12, 2007
Doris Kwan considers herself a shy person. She prefers to keep to herself and when she talks -- if at all -- she speaks with a small, soft voice. That is until you start talking with her about fashion. Kwan is an international student from Hong Kong. She thinks the Utah fashion scene is a little dry. During the interview, Kwan was sporting leopard-print high heels she bought at Claire's, a gray, ruffled blouse from Hong Kong and sparkly, bright pink eye shadow. The prices of clothes back home, she said, are far cheaper than those she's found in Utah stores.

In Depth: U makes international push

By By Rochelle McConkie September 12, 2007
Commencing what U President Michael Young called the year of internationalization, the U is working to make its academia transcend geography. A number of new degrees, institutes and centers, study abroad and internship programs, as well as academic programs, will be implemented during current school year to increase international awareness and opportunities for students and faculty.

Anime exposed

By By Michael McFall September 12, 2007
Naota Nandaba's head was killing him. As the 12-year-old stumbled around a small town bridge in Mabase, Japan, two giant robots came bursting from a portal on his forehead -- one shaped like an enormous hand, the other, a human with a television for a head.

U football notebook: reason for concern

By By Cody Brunner September 12, 2007
The Utes' coaching staff still isn't happy with the production of the running game, and who can blame them? In two games, Utah has amassed only 91 total rushing yards. Leading the Utes is junior Ray Stowers, who has rushed the ball 17 times for 47 yards.

In Depth: Visiting professors give global perspective

By By Carlos Mayorga September 12, 2007
After spending the summer in her native Belgium, Therese De Raedt hurried back to teach her course on literature and culture of French-speaking nations. De Raedt, a professor in the Department of Languages and Literature, has been with the U since 1999. De Raedt first came to the United States in 1992 to teach at a small college in Ohio and earn her doctorate from UC Davis.

Students should be encouraged to mourn, not sheltered from the truth

By By Melissa Schack September 12, 2007
A man who had worked as a custodian for years at the U jumped to his death off of the observation deck on the fifth floor of the Warnock Engineering Building on Aug. 30 around 8:45 p.m. We may never know the man's name, why he did it or even what he looked like.

Letter: Please don’t smoke

September 12, 2007
Editor: I want smoking on campus banned or restricted to areas that would keep smokers out of the majority of people's walkways. I am very annoyed when I am walking to class in a large group of people and suddenly I inhale a nice breath of second-hand smoke.

The trouble with Vermont

By By Steve Coons September 12, 2007
Approximately 13 percent of Vermont supports a theoretical secession from the United States. I say "theoretical secession" because there is little chance that Vermont will actually secede. They want a peaceful secession -- the worst kind of secession. Peace has never won anyone anything but a crucifixion.

Pre-conference gift in disguise?

September 12, 2007
Finally, the U volleyball team can exhale -- at least a little bit. After spending the summer weathering the abrupt departure of Airial Salvo and Sydney Anderson and coping with the season-ending injury to middle-blocker Emillie Toone, the Utes experienced growing pains against the most arduous non-conference schedule in team history.
