The Drop: Don’t go to the music store without it

September 6, 2007
Liars Liars Mute Records Four out of five stars It's always nice to hear a band push the boundaries of rock 'n' roll without exorcising the spirit that is rock 'n' roll. Velvet Underground allusions sometime seem unavoidable when describing modern artists who craft droning avant-rock soundscapes beneath minimalist poetics.

On the road

By By Trevor Hale September 6, 2007
Bands these days have no heart. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's true. Back in the day, the only way to make it was to tour relentlessly and hit any city referred to as "the armpit of America" at least twice. Nowadays, all you need is a MySpace page and the right friends.

Gonzales’ Latino background shouldn’t have been a factor

By By Nicholas Pappas September 6, 2007
In a perfect world, we should be judged by our deeds and only those deeds. It shouldn't make a difference whether our skin is brown, our clothes are shoddy or our wallet is slim. This is not a perfect world -- it is far from it. In this world, it's important to put everyone in a box, seal it shut and write with a Sharpie where they should go.

By By Rochelle McConkie September 5, 2007
During a typical week of campaigning, U student Ingrid Price can be seen riding through town on a Ralph Becker bicycle, emblazoned with one of the Democratic mayoral candidate's bright yellow signs, writing press releases for Becker's website or drafting his daily schedule.

Debate not just for politicians

By By Clayton Norlen September 5, 2007
Debate. A six-letter word that summarizes democracy. The U's debate team is preparing for the upcoming season and is hoping to add more students to its ranks. Traditionally, those looking to be lawyers or politicians pursue debate, but the team is looking for any student with a passionate interest in current events and open discussion.

Eco chef buys local

By By Arthur Raymond September 5, 2007
Though the weather leads us to believe that we are still in the throes of a brutally hot summer, for Jim Rowan a Saturday morning stroll through Salt Lake's Downtown Farmers' Market shows sure signs of a change of season -- it's harvest time! This bounty is not just a harbinger of fall. It is also a call to local chefs, like Rowan of University Dining Services, that their menus can be highlighted with delicious local produce. On any one of these Saturdays, Rowan might be spotted picking the choicest goods to haul back to the Union to become part of the dining selections that U students are offered every day.
