You gotta laugh

By By Adam Kirk August 31, 2007
This isn't quite the life I had imagined coming home from a mission. As I sat next to my mother at the U's orientation meeting, I kept looking over at a cute girl and imagining how to casually ask her out. It didn't take long to notice that there were about 1,000 students that were stunningly beautiful who made the other 28,000 of us look butt-ugly.

Free speech protects your enemies, too

By By Ryan Shattuck August 31, 2007
In his 1988 book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, Noam Chomsky boldly states: "Goebbels was in favor of free speech for views he liked. So was Stalin. If you're in favor of free speech, then you're in favor of freedom of speech precisely for views you despise.

Robert Rice, a longtime U donor after whom the U's Rice-Eccles Stadium is named, died Wednesday night. Rice was being treated at the Huntsman Cancer Center when he died from cancer-related complications, family members said. He was 78. If you think the U's football team has a tough schedule this year, consider what the Ute futbol team is up against. The U women's soccer team -- winner of back-to-back Mountain West Conference titles -- won't make its debut at Ute Field until the fifth game of the season.

Grant funds job safety research, training

August 31, 2007
A $6.6 million five-year grant was recently awarded to the U's Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health to research workplace safety. "Our goal is to reduce and eliminate all occupational death, including mining-related deaths like the ones that recently occurred in Utah," said Kurt Hegmann, director of the center.

By By Jonathan Long August 31, 2007
Three U professors played a key role in co-editing a new journal exploring women's roles and rights in the rapidly growing Chinese economy. The journal was published in a recent periodical issue of Feminist Economics and investigates the adverse effects on a widening gender gap in the country.

Activating activism

By By Lauren Mangelson August 31, 2007
"Wanted: Political Activists." Members of the Public Interest Advocacy student group handed out flyers with this message at last Friday's Crimson Nights. Members of the Bennion Community Service Center founded the group -- which aims to influence state legislatures to bring about social changes -- nearly 15 years ago.

ASUU backs recycling

By By Rochelle McConkie August 31, 2007
The ASUU Senate unanimously passed a bill Thursday night granting $25,000 to the new recycling program, adding the "student portion" to the $350,000 put out by the U administration for the cause. The sum is the first of two payments adding up to $50,000 the Associated Students of the University of Utah hopes to give to recycling this year.

Beckham-less Galaxy next on tap for RSL

By By Jon Gilbert August 31, 2007
With the sun setting on its playoff hopes, Real Salt Lake found a way to freeze time -- if only for a few weeks. RSL found resurgence in the offensive third to beat Kansas City 3-1 Wednesday night and stop its slide out of the playoff picture. The scoring explosion contradicts Real's season-long offensive inadequacy and gives charge to playoff aspirations.

Hopes dashed

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Things couldn't have gone worse for the Utes in their opener against Oregon State. Besides losing the game 24-7, the Utes also lost junior quarterback and team savior Brian Johnson, who separated his throwing shoulder. The junior is expected to miss three to five weeks with the injury.
