The Drop

August 2, 2007
Summer's dead. Accept it. Stow away the board shorts. Scrape off the suntan lotion. Make that overdue visit to the dermatologist to laser off all that en-vogue skin cancer. The books are already en route to bury us all. Luckily, we need not graft away our beloved summer soundtracks.

Cost-cutting digital books popular

By By Arthur Raymond August 2, 2007
In the realm of escalating textbook prices, some students are turning to electronic texts as a cost-effective way to prepare for class and stretch their education dollars. But even though digital textbook options are growing on the Web, they represent a relatively small portion of total textbook sales.

New span links popular trails

Commuting to the U will be safer and healthier in the future. Students and faculty living in the Sugar House area will one day be able to bike to campus without riding along a busy street. A new bridge placed over I-215 near Parley's Canyon this summer was the beginning of a massive project to create Utah's first east-west trail corridor.

The ‘bird does summer

By By Jessica Dunn August 2, 2007
Snowbird is best known for what it does in the winter. But did you know you can still enjoy the resort without the skiing, snowboarding and fresh pow? During the summer, while the valley is baking in the 90-degree temperatures, Snowbird stays at a cool 60 to 70 degrees during the day.

Campus police escorts ease late-night fears

By By Jane Stringham August 2, 2007
As darkness falls on campus, a program awakens to aid U students stuck in night classes or cramming for an exam in the library. From dusk until dawn, students strolling home through a dark campus always have the option of a U security officer's company. The Department of Public Safety at the U offers the After Dark Campus Safety Escort Service with no fee and no frequency limit for its users.

Second home sweet home

SALT LAKE CITY - The Celtics got theirs. So did New York and Orlando. In an off-season featuring a few teams mortgaging their salary caps (and their futures) to pick up those one or two players who can take them to the top, the Utah Jazz quietly got in on the action and rolled out their latest addition- Ronnie Price.

Eaglewood: North Salt Lake’s neighborhood golf course

August 2, 2007
Nestled in a bench-area neighborhood in North Salt Lake is Eaglewood Golf Course. Some might say it's a little too tucked into the neighborhood. Eaglewood has plenty to offer in terms of terrific putting surfaces and great views, but if you're looking for a flat surface beyond the tee box, Eaglewood is not the place.

Wingin’ it

August 2, 2007
Under normal circumstances, golf courses and airports don't usually mix. But Utah is hardly a normal place, and there is a golf course nestled at the fringes of Salt Lake International Airport that manages to pull off the odd mixture quite nicely. Wingpointe Golf Course literally sits on the front steps of one of the biggest airports in the western United States, and in 17 years it has managed to become one of the hardest public golf courses in Salt Lake City -- and not because of the 800,000-pound distractions overhead.

More than just fun and games

Let's get one thing straight before we hit the tee box: The U Golf Course is not a little slice of golfing heaven stitched out of the same cloth as Augusta, Ga., Pebble Beach or even the Old Mill Golf Course in Holladay, Utah. It's not trying to be. But for what the U Golf Course lacks in pristine conditions and immaculate layout, it makes up for in an opportunity to learn.
