Voices: UPC is the place to be

The Union Programming Council is a premier campus organization dedicated to providing quality student events and exceptional leadership experiences. UPC is best known for hosting the U's most anticipated campus party, Crimson Nights. It also offers many other services to students, such as the Campus Organization Resource Center, the U-Scribe and various free events such as Family Day, Oktoberfest, the Wall of Oppression, Friday Night Live, gaming tournaments and the Union Film Festival.

Eaglewood: North Salt Lake’s neighborhood golf course

Nestled in a bench-area neighborhood in North Salt Lake is Eaglewood Golf Course. Some might say it's a little too tucked into the neighborhood. Eaglewood has plenty to offer in terms of terrific putting surfaces and great views, but if you're looking for a flat surface beyond the tee box, Eaglewood is not the place.

Under normal circumstances, golf courses and airports don't usually mix. But Utah is hardly a normal place, and there is a golf course nestled at the fringes of Salt Lake International Airport that manages to pull off the odd mixture quite nicely. Wingpointe Golf Course literally sits on the front steps of one of the biggest airports in the western United States, and in 17 years it has managed to become one of the hardest public golf courses in Salt Lake City -- and not because of the 800,000-pound distractions overhead.

Let's get one thing straight before we hit the tee box: The U Golf Course is not a little slice of golfing heaven stitched out of the same cloth as Augusta, Ga., Pebble Beach or even the Old Mill Golf Course in Holladay, Utah. It's not trying to be. But for what the U Golf Course lacks in pristine conditions and immaculate layout, it makes up for in an opportunity to learn.

Getting better with age

Utah may not be home to Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, Pinehurst No. 2 or Bethpage Black, but it still has reason to be proud of its vast and beautiful public golf courses. Bonneville golf course is one that has helped hold up that reputation for the Beehive State.

Though an apathetic cringe may accompany any mention of the clichd "college-is-for-horizon-broadening" adage, the U truly is a place to abandon prejudices of youth and acquire a more comprehensive cultural awareness. Art is an effective catalyst for this broadening and music is one of its most powerful mediums.

With more than 20 galleries in city limits -- exhibiting art works ranging from classical to modern in all ranges of media -- Salt Lake City boasts one of the largest per-capita fine arts communities in the Western United States.
