Legislators must face the facts about threat of global warming

By By John Stafford March 2, 2009

Noel and the other nonbelievers are going to have a hard time trying to overturn Roe v. Wade if they don't have a hospitable planet to do it from.

Funding for student groups needs to be monitored

By By Alan Monsen and By Alan Monsen February 28, 2009

All students are facing a rise in tuition and faculty and departments are facing budget cuts. It just might be time to decrease student group funding.

Ease of defrauding state points to bad protocol

By By Kiyan Sharifian and By Kiyan Sharifian February 28, 2009

With the litany of people signing off on projects, a con man should not have been able to defraud the U. The media has echoed that this type of scam is easy enough for a child to pull off. It appears that the vendor codes from the U, which were swiped by the scammers, are known by a circle of people, thereby limiting the promise of secrecy.

Bad sex ed has ripple effect

By By Jonathan Deesing February 26, 2009

Many teens are going to have sex regardless of what they are taught in high school. Either we can ignore this and hope that an underpaid high school teacher can instill "good morals" in teens, or we can be progressive and teach them how to grow into responsible college students and adults.

Too close to theocracy

By By John Stafford February 26, 2009

The fact that church officials are annually meeting directly with lawmakers puts the LDS Church's so-called "political neutrality" in question. There is nowhere else in the country where an annual powwow between lawmakers and a church body takes place, and these meetings seem to have more in common with an Iranian theocracy than a U.S. government that emphasizes church-state separation.

Smokers should police themselves in cars

By By Liz Carlston, Staff Writer February 26, 2009

Smoking should be a no-brainer decision, particularly when a child with developing lungs is present. But the government shouldn't be responsible for policing citizens' behavior around their children. They should be able to police themselves.

24 Hour Fitness contracts better than Gold’s

February 26, 2009

The only reason I defend 24 Hour Fitness is because I'm a complete and utter fitness guru and I picked my gym wisely based on their membership perks. Gold's Gym, on the other hand, I can't speak much for. I've heard awful things.

Federal Heights needs to coexist with Greek Row

By By Steven Warrick February 25, 2009

No matter how much we enjoy the film "Animal House," few of us would want to deal with toga parties in our own neighborhoods or Bluto and Flounder urinating and vomiting on the front porch. It would just be easier to sympathize with the residents if they were better neighbors themselves. On the other hand, the residents need to understand that living next to a university is different from living elsewhere.

Immigration reform bill is redundant and inefficient

February 25, 2009

As a member of the Honors College Social Justice Scholars, I represent our group in saying that we fervently oppose House Bill 64, Deterring Illegal Immigration, for two main and closely related reasons: ambiguity and inefficiency.

GRAMA-restricting H.B. 122 counter to gov’t transparency

By By Jeffrey Jenkins February 25, 2009

H.B. 122 would serve only the interest of the government by allowing it to be easier to cover up the trail of corruption. Do not allow the Legislature to chain down the watchdog of government offices and officials. Tell you representative how you feel about H.B. 122.
