First Black Mayor In State Elected

SOUTH OGDEN?George Garwood Jr. has taken his oath of office as mayor of South Ogden, thus becoming Utah's first black mayor. "He's always been a politician. He's outgoing and mingles with anyone on the block," Garwood's brother Steven said during the ceremony.

Kofoed Named to SoccerBuzz All-West Team

U soccer star Amy Kofoed, who finished her eligibility this past year, earned another accolade as a member of SoccerBuzz magazine's All West Second Team. This is the second consecutive year she has received this honor. She made the Third Team as a sophomore.

Business Denied Travel Into Cuba

WASHINGTON?In denying a leading U.S. agribusiness group the right to travel to Cuba, the Treasury Department has touched off complaints that it has no fixed guidelines on who should be allowed to visit the communist island. An Illinois-based nonprofit group, the Farm Foundation, had hoped to send about 100 people, including two former agriculture secretaries, to Cuba last week on a fact finding mission.

NEW DELHI, India?Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said Tuesday that India faces a serious terrorist threat, but he urged the nation's leaders to hold talks with Pakistan to ease a crisis that has brought the neighbors close to war. "While fighting terrorism, you should have a political horizon and conduct a dialogue," Peres, a Nobel Peace laureate, said after meeting here with Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh.
