The Chronicle’s View: Taking Responsibility for Tuition Fight

With the closure of Fall Semester and the end of the year, now is the time for reflection. Looking back, the Associated Students of the University of Utah have had a fairly successful semester. ASUU finally got the child-care center up and running, fixed some nasty election finance loopholes and at least attempted to get students involved.

ASUU Hits Half-Way Mark

On March 8, 1,635 students elected Ben Lowe and Mike Nelson as the president and vice president of the Associated Students of the University of Utah. They promised to better students lives, improve communication and run a "no bull" government. In the spirit of such a government, let's look at their campaign promises, see what they've accomplished, what they've neglected and what they've expanded on.

During Finals Week, Free ASUU Child Care

The Associated Students of the University of Utah hope to care for 50 children a day during finals week. The ASUU Child Care Center, located in the Emery Building on Presidents Circle, is offering free child care during finals week for parents and children who register in time.

Utes Place Four on MWC First Team

It's late-season swoon notwithstanding, the Utah football team saw some recognition come its way Wednesday for finishing the year at 7-4 after being picked to finish just sixth in the Mountain West Conference. In recognition of the team's massive turnaround, the MWC All-Conference Team included 18 Utes.

Engineering a Way for U Students to Communicate

The Daily Utah Chronicle is a great little newspaper?just ask anyone who works here. But seriously, the Chrony published one news article in particular that caught my attention last week, and I haven't been able to shake the idea of it since. Apparently, the mechanical engineering department is attempting to implement a program that integrates communication skills into the hard science curriculum.

Will Students Have Rooms in Spring?

With less than two weeks before students are evicted from the residence halls, Brian Brown doesn't know where he's going to live next semester. A freshman studying biology, Brown signed a contract before the semester began which ensured him a room through fall.

U Pedestrian Bridge Dedicated

After much anticipation, the George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge is open to the public. U President Bernie Machen, along with Salt Lake Organizing Committee President Mitt Romney and others, dedicated the new single-pylon suspension bridge across Wasatch Drive.

Utah State U. National Guard students help with Olympic security

LOGAN?Students from Utah State University who serve in the National Guard will be helping to make sure Utah is safe during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Although it is difficult to tell how many students serve in the Guard and how many will actually be called on active duty, the number is still high, said Terry Haslam, public affairs assistant for the Utah National Guard.

World Needs Uniform Extradition Laws

Nabil Fahmy believes that in order to wipe out terrorism, countries will need to create a standard system for extradition. As the Egyptian ambassador to the United States, Fahmy represents a country that was torn apart by terrorism 10 years ago. However, for four years, the terrorist activity in Egypt has stopped.
