Errant U.S. Bomb Kills 3, Injures 19 Soldiers

WASHINGTON?Three American soldiers were killed and 19 wounded in Afghanistan Wednesday when a U.S. bomb missed its Taliban target. The bomb, carrying 2,000 pounds of explosives, landed about 100 yards from the soldiers' position north of Kandahar, where the Taliban is making its last stand against Afghan opposition forces.

Congress OKs $3M for Light Rail Extension

The Utah Transit Authority and the U received the congressional green light on the hospital light rail line Tuesday. The U.S. Congress appropriated $3 million to extend the TRAX line from Rice-Eccles Stadium to University Hospital as part of its annual Transportation Appropriations Act.

U Pedestrian Bridge Dedicated

After much anticipation, the George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge is open to the public. U President Bernie Machen, along with Salt Lake Organizing Committee President Mitt Romney and others, dedicated the new single-pylon suspension bridge across Wasatch Drive.

Pharmacy Prof. Named Head of Drug Institute

U Professor Glen Hanson has become the acting director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, one of the National Institutes of Health. Hanson's specialty is psychostimulants, addictive drugs like amphetamines and cocaine. "In addition to being a well recognized scientist, he's one of the finest teachers at the school," said William Crowley, chairman of the pharmacology and toxicology department.

World Needs Uniform Extradition Laws

Nabil Fahmy believes that in order to wipe out terrorism, countries will need to create a standard system for extradition. As the Egyptian ambassador to the United States, Fahmy represents a country that was torn apart by terrorism 10 years ago. However, for four years, the terrorist activity in Egypt has stopped.

Shorten Transplant Waiting List, Study Says

A new study led by U researchers found that most cystic fibrosis patients did not live longer after receiving lung transplants. The findings showed that only the sickest transplant patients, those with less than a 30 percent expected five year survival rate, benefitted from a lung transplant.

Engineering a Way for U Students to Communicate

The Daily Utah Chronicle is a great little newspaper?just ask anyone who works here. But seriously, the Chrony published one news article in particular that caught my attention last week, and I haven't been able to shake the idea of it since. Apparently, the mechanical engineering department is attempting to implement a program that integrates communication skills into the hard science curriculum.

In a Dec. 5 article titled, "Database Helps With Cancer, Aging Research," The Chronicle misquoted Jean Wylie. Her final quote should have read, "When researchers ask Utahns to participate in a study, they don't have to explain why families are important." The Chronicle regrets the error.
