Football Will Focus on Its Final Game

November 20, 2001
Most any other year, a loss to BYU, like in Saturday's 24 21 defeat, would mark the end of the season for the Utah football team. The Utes would have time to reflect on blowing an 11-point, fourth-quarter lead, time to reconcile the idea of letting their biggest game of the year slip through their fingers before eventually preparing for a bowl game or clearing out their lockers.

Women’s Hoops Faces Albertson

November 20, 2001
Two games into the regular season, the Utah women's basketball team will be playing an exhibition match tonight. Sure, the schedule says the Utes' matchup with Albertson College (of Idaho) is a full fledged regular-season affair, but after reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, taking on an opponent whose own slate includes such luminaries as Linfield College, Westmont College and Carroll College, constitutes little more than glorified practice time.

U Medical Students Complain About Distant, Unsafe Parking

November 20, 2001
After an 18-hour shift at University Hospital, waiting another hour before getting to bed was excruciating for fourth-year medical student Alison Schick. Staying at the hospital until 2 a.m. to finish her shift is not unusual for Schick. With her car parked at the E-lot near Red Butte Garden?a 15 minute walk through the dark and desolate parking lots of the medical complex?one night, she decided to try the escort service provided by hospital security.

Gun Ban May Get Shot Down Soon

November 20, 2001
SALT LAKE CITY?A long standing ban on guns in state offices is at odds with Utah law and likely will be tossed out in the next few months. The Utah Attorney General's office has told state lawmakers the ban was effectively negated in 1999 by changes the Legislature made to the state's gun laws.

Jacquelyn Molina wakes up every weekday morning at 7 a.m. in her Rose Park apartment, and helps two of her siblings get ready for school. She walks with them to North Star Elementary, trying to beat the 8:15 a.m. tardy bell.

ANCIENT OLYMPIA, Greece? The flame that will burn at the 2002 Winter Games began its long journey to Salt lake City on Monday after a ceremony held among the ruins where the Olympics were born. Cloudy skies and sporadic showers prevented the flame from being lighted during the ceremony.

State Asks Court to Hear Census Case

November 20, 2001
WASHINGTON?The state of Utah plans to ask the Supreme Court on Tuesday to hear its challenge to the 2000 census. If successful, the appeal would gain the state a House seat at North Carolina's expense. Earlier this month, a three-judge panel rejected Utah's claim that the Census Bureau had erred in counting the populations of the two states, which resulted in North Carolina adding a 13th House seat, while Utah fell just short of getting a fourth.
