Snow Will Replace Benson as Special Assistant to Machen

November 20, 2001
Laura Snow knows a little bit about being special assistant to the University of Utah president. She saw her father, R.J. Snow, fulfill the role during the first part of President David Gardner's term in the 1970s?now she will get a chance of her own.

Soccer Players Say That Coach Was Kicked Out

November 20, 2001
Amy Winslow was the only soccer coach the University of Utah has ever known. In her seven years at the helm, Winslow compiled a 77-53-5 record?a winning percentage of 57 percent. But when she announced that she was resigning (along with husband and assistant Jim) on Nov. 15 at a team meeting?just one week after the Utes were ousted in the MWC Tournament semifinals?some of her players questioned whether it was her choice, especially when her release included the phrase, "pursue other interests"?which tends to imply the decision came from elsewhere.

Alligator Breathing Studied

November 20, 2001
Some European birds can fly 600 miles in a day searching for food. Other animals lie in wait, ready for their prey to stumble upon them. Animals' lifestyles run the gamut. Two researchers in the University of Utah's biology department are curious as to why. How an animal breathes may be an important part of the answer.

Football Will Focus on Its Final Game

November 20, 2001
Most any other year, a loss to BYU, like in Saturday's 24 21 defeat, would mark the end of the season for the Utah football team. The Utes would have time to reflect on blowing an 11-point, fourth-quarter lead, time to reconcile the idea of letting their biggest game of the year slip through their fingers before eventually preparing for a bowl game or clearing out their lockers.

U Student Raped

November 20, 2001
From 1998 to 2000, five rapes were reported to the University of Utah Police Department, according to its 2000 Campus Safety Brochure, a figure which Chief Ben Lemmon said is "extremely low" when compared to other campuses in the United States. The most recently reported rape at the U happened last week.

ASUU plans to launch the book exchange on Dec. 1, in time for students to exchange books for Spring Semester.

Women’s Hoops Faces Albertson

November 20, 2001
Two games into the regular season, the Utah women's basketball team will be playing an exhibition match tonight. Sure, the schedule says the Utes' matchup with Albertson College (of Idaho) is a full fledged regular-season affair, but after reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, taking on an opponent whose own slate includes such luminaries as Linfield College, Westmont College and Carroll College, constitutes little more than glorified practice time.

U Medical Students Complain About Distant, Unsafe Parking

November 20, 2001
After an 18-hour shift at University Hospital, waiting another hour before getting to bed was excruciating for fourth-year medical student Alison Schick. Staying at the hospital until 2 a.m. to finish her shift is not unusual for Schick. With her car parked at the E-lot near Red Butte Garden?a 15 minute walk through the dark and desolate parking lots of the medical complex?one night, she decided to try the escort service provided by hospital security.

Gun Ban May Get Shot Down Soon

November 20, 2001
SALT LAKE CITY?A long standing ban on guns in state offices is at odds with Utah law and likely will be tossed out in the next few months. The Utah Attorney General's office has told state lawmakers the ban was effectively negated in 1999 by changes the Legislature made to the state's gun laws.
