Fighting Continues in Mideast, 1 Killed

JERUSALEM?Israeli troops killed one Palestinian and wounded another Monday as the two were planting a bomb along a road in the West Bank. Earlier, three Israelis were wounded in a shooting attack. The relatively minor fighting?and a brief incursion into Gaza by Israeli tanks?came as Secretary of State Colin Powell called on the Palestinians to stop violence immediately and insisted that Israel halt settlement construction.

Mideast Officials Prepare for Talks

JERUSALEM?Israelis and Palestinians readied themselves Tuesday for talks with a new U.S. Mideast envoy, a tough retired Marine Corps general expected to press the two sides to stop 14 months of fighting. Anthony Zinni is to arrive with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State William Burns at the beginning of next week, Israeli and Palestinian officials said, seeking to end the violence that has resisted successive U.

U. Oklahoma students face immigration charges

NORMAN, Okla.?The Immigration and Naturalization Service is charging the president of University of Oklahoma's Pakistani Student Association and his two Pakistani roommates with immigration violations. The three OU students, who the INS arrested Nov. 8 on campus, are being held in the Oklahoma County Detention Center in Oklahoma City.

Countries May Be Aiding bin Laden

GENEVA?The United States accused Iraq, North Korea and four other countries Monday of building germ-warfare arsenals, and said it worried one of them might be helping Osama bin Laden in his quest for biological weapons. "We are concerned that [bin Laden] could have been trying to acquire a rudimentary biological weapons capability, possibly with support from a state," said John Bolton, undersecretary of state for arms control.

Bowling Green State U. graduate student accused of genocide

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio?Pierre-Celestin Rwigema denied that he was involved in the killing of 800,000 Tutsis in 1994 and insisted that his life was in danger during the genocide. An arrest warrant was issued by Rwanda in April 2001. He is being charged with crimes against humanity and genocide for the death of the Tutsis.

Stategy Will Help Find Mailer Soon

WASHINGTON?Government scientists have a strategy they hope will help lead them to the sender of a letter to Sen. Patrick Leahy that is believed to contain anthrax, the FBI said Monday. The bureau said investigators are convinced the letter to Leahy and an anthrax-laden letter to Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle were sent by the same person.

Anthrax Samples Show Toxic Levels

WASHINGTON?A sample taken from a plastic evidence bag containing a still-unopened letter to Sen. Patrick Leahy contains at least 23,000 anthrax spores, enough for more than two lethal doses, a federal law enforcement official said Tuesday. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there were three times more anthrax spores in the single sample taken from the plastic bag than in any of the other 600 bags of mail examined by the FBI before it found the Leahy letter.
