Tribes Encircle Last Taliban Strongholds

BANGI, Afghanistan?Northern alliance forces and Pashtun tribesmen encircled two of the Taliban's last remaining strongholds at opposite ends of the country Thursday. The Taliban's supreme leader said he preferred death to joining any new coalition government.

Lacey Heward likes exceeding expectations. When she was six, a barbell fell on her and crushed her spine, paralyzing her from the waist down. "Growing up in a wheelchair, you get a lot of looks. People put their hands on their knees and look at you and say, 'How are you doing today?'" Heward said, describing the condescending way some people approach her disability.

U Graduate Works Wonders With Water

Water is one of the most simple substances of all, yet through fountains and other installations, it can bring joy, according to Mark Fuller, chairman and CEO of WET Design. WET Design has completed 200 installations throughout the world, most notably The Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas. The fountain incorporates light and water streams to put on a show set to music. Fuller's lecture took place Wednesday afternoon in the Marriott Library's Gould auditorium. Audience members lined the back of the room and sat on the floor in the front.

FAA Orders National Plane Inspections

WASHINGTON?The Federal Aviation Administration plans to order U.S. airlines that fly Airbus A300 planes to inspect their fleets, focusing on the tail that sheared off in Monday's plane crash in New York. The order was expected to be issued Friday, FAA spokesman William Shumann said.

U Reopens Pool Today

The HPER pool is scheduled to open again today at about 1 p.m. After a swimming student reported possibly having the parasite cryptosporidium, the College of Health closed the pool Monday at about 9 a.m. While closed, the pool was hyperchlorinated, curing it of any contamination.

SLOC to Banner Local Buildings

SALT LAKE CITY?The first of 11 gigantic images of Olympic athletes has gone up on a downtown building. By mid-January, nine more office towers and a building at the University of Utah will be similarly transformed. The building wraps, measuring as much as 141 feet long and 97 feet wide, will depict winter sports athletes, including a figure skater, snowboarder and Paralympian.

Did you see last Monday night's game with the Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens? What a finish! That was incredible! The end was basically determined by the officials' decision. Contrary to what the Titan fans may think, the officials' ultimate decision was 100 percent perfect.
