U alumni share Peace Corps experiences

Next summer, only months after her graduation, Zan Larsen will be leaving to join the Peace Corps. Although she has not yet been assigned a country, the senior political science major has completed the application process and was nominated in August to serve in Eastern Europe.

Dance marathon wins Rock the U funding from ASUU

The ASUU Senate passed a bill Thursday granting $25,000 to Rock the U-a new charity group that will host a 26.2-hour dance marathon later this year to raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The money will come out of the Associated Students of the University of Utah general reserve fund, which currently contains $250,000.

UCard expansion offers new businesses, online depositing system

Many U students use their UCard multiple times a day-whether it's to get into a dorm, pay for a meal at Chartwells, check out a library book or get a discount on a new Ute sweatshirt. Now, however, with new businesses involved and a new online depositing system, the UCard is expanding its capabilities for students.

Utah NROTC team wins first place in Marine Corps Volkslauf 10K

Making their way through miles of walls, ditches, rope climbs, water-filled tunnels and mud trenches, four members of the Utah Naval Reserve Office Training Corps won first place overall in the Volkslauf Marine Corp 10K. In Bakersfield, Calif., on Oct. 14, Chris Sanchez, Ryan Himmighoefer, Jeff Monroe and Steven Mackay set a course record with their time of 59:05.

Mayor Anderson leads fight against global warming

Salt Lake City has gone green to combat global warming. Mayor Rocky Anderson addressed the issue and the steps Salt Lake City is taking to protect and preserve the environment at an Oct. 18 lecture held at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and sponsored by the honors program.

ASUU leaders hope for student life center

In the near future, a student life center could be coming to the U campus. During the first week of October, the Associated Students of the University of Utah President Jake Kirkham and Vice President Toby Collett traveled to Ohio State University for three days to tour its new student life center, acclaimed as one of the best centers on college campuses nationwide.

Recruiters organize Pi Kappa Phi fraternity on campus

Cade Spackman is an undecided freshman at the U. Straight out of high school, Spackman hasn't settled on a major and is still deciphering the ins and outs of college life. He is sure of one thing, though-he wants to join a fraternity. This week, when Spackman was walking through the Union cafeteria, he stopped at a table and was greeted by Brandon Belote and Billy Boulden, two representatives dressed in shirts and ties recruiting U students to join the newest fraternity on campus-Pi Kappa Phi.

Greek Row Neighborhood Relations Committee holds closed meetings

Once a month since 1987, the Greek Row Neighborhood Relations Committee has met behind closed doors. This committee, comprising Greek Council Officers, chapter presidents, the Assistant Dean of Students and Greek Council Advisers, neighbors from the Greek Row community and police officers, meets together to discuss ways to improve the relations between U sorority and fraternity houses and the surrounding community.
