Karate chops and karaoke

Somewhere lurking about campus, posting fliers and writing sidewalk chalk campaign messages in the dark of the night is the unknown candidate only identified as Ninja. With 34 votes, the mysterious Ninja Karaoke Opposition Party claimed the most write-in votes in the Associated Students of the University of Utah primary elections last week.

Pearson and Pehrson make the cut

The FUSE Party and Forward Party will move on to the ASUU general elections, leaving More 4 U and Activate behind. FUSE presidential and vice presidential candidates Spencer Pearson and Basim Motiwala took first in the Associated Students of the University of Utah primary elections with 1529 votes.

Campaigning in full swing

As students make their way to classes this week, many have to dodge colored shirts and food-covered tables manned with ASUU candidates competing for their votes. For the small commitments of "Maybe I'll vote for you" or "I'll listen to what you have to say," students can receive free hot dogs, nachos, fortune cookies and even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from a plethora of campaign tables scattered across campus.

Parties punished

After a long and arduous night of grievances, the ASUU Elections Committee found the More 4 U Party guilty of 10 grievances. Fourteen grievances were filed against the party for violations of posting and campaigning rules. Of the 14, one grievance was dropped and the party was found not guilty of two.

Platforms on the plaza

Student government hopefuls kicked off the primary elections yesterday with a debate in front of a sea of red-, orange-, green- and yellow-clad students at the Marriott Library Plaza. Students threw out questions to the presidential and vice-presidential hopefuls about campus sustainability, advising, Greek Row and student health insurance.

Betas volunteer at children’s carnival

As part of its commitment to provide service to the Salt Lake community, the Beta Theta Phi fraternity volunteered at a carnival yesterday at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club in Rose Park. "We're tying to focus a lot more on service projects instead of raising money," said Neel Limaye, the fraternity's president.

Primary colors

Today and tomorrow, U students can decide which candidates will move on to the next rounds of the ASUU elections. Kicking off the primary elections with a call for increased voter participation, the student government is sponsoring an event called "OSHfest" today in the area between the Marriott Library Plaza and OSH.

During Wednesday's debate held at the Petersen Heritage Center, ASUU presidential, vice presidential and senior class president candidates addressed questions relating to the Residence Halls.

ASUU to expand childcare facility

ASUU is enlarging its childcare program, allowing more students to study without worrying about changing diapers and crying infants. The Associated Students of the University of Utah currently offers subsidized care to the parents of about 80 children each day at a facility in the Alfred Emery Building.
