Candidates get names out online and on the streets

With new rules on electronic campaigning, the Internet may make a difference in this year's student government campaigns. Since the expansion of student involvement in Web sites such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube, regulations have been added to the election rulebook limiting candidates' abilities to actively campaign online.

Men dominate ASUU’s top post

While women are serving in more prominent political positions on a national level, their prominence in student government at the U has diminished. A woman was more likely to be elected student body president or vice president before the 1960s than in 2007, according to records provided by the Associated Students of the University of Utah dating back to 1931.

With a definite location and solid plans, organizers of the Rock the U dance marathon are optimistic that the event is becoming a reality, but after changing goals, some are less convinced.

ASUU falls short on scholarship promise, forms new plans for spring

Members of the BLOC Party took student government office last spring with the commitment to create 50 new scholarships for students. Now, in the second semester of their term, only two scholarships have been created. "We had a harder time than we thought, but we are definitely not giving up on our goal," Student Body President Jake Kirkham said.

Election grievance may be filed against Beech

Members of the ASUU elections committee are considering filing a grievance against presidential candidate Cameron Beech for speaking with The Daily Utah Chronicle before filing date and dialogue week. Beech sent a memo to some of the other presidential candidates announcing his campaign colors, contact information and his intentions to have a clean campaign.

Diversity conference encourages dialogue

The message of dialogue as a means of promoting social change resonated throughout the Conference on Social Awareness held on Saturday in the Union. The Associated Students of the University of Utah Diversity Board sponsored the third annual diversity conference.

More debates, more parties and more clarifications of election rules will occur in the upcoming student government elections, which begin when candidates start filing this Friday. At the elections premiere meeting held last night, Elections Registrar Lorraine Evans emphasized her desire for all candidates running for ASUU office to know the rules.

Beech reaches out to fellow student body president candidates

Before kicking off his campaign for student body president, Cameron Beech wanted to make one point clear-he wants to keep things clean. Beech and running mate Ryan Carrier sent out a memo to fellow candidates Rick Pehrson and Spencer Pearson, two contenders planning to run for student body president in the upcoming elections, and their vice-presidential candidates.

ASUU position changes continue in new semester
