The X Factor: Can the Utes’ secondary slow down Jeff Webb and the Aztec receivers?

The Utah secondary has had its share of problems, namely the sophomore slump of cornerback Ryan Smith. The 5-foot-10-inch, 165-pound Smith had poor showing against both Air Force and North Carolina and lost his starting job last week to freshman Brice McCain.

McCain played well, but he is just 5 feet 9 inches, which could be a match-up problem against San Diego State’s all-conference wideout Jeff Webb. At 6 feet 2 inches and 200 pounds, Webb is a physical receiver. He is second in the Mountain West with 41 receptions this season for 467 yards.

Webb, a senior, has plenty of experience against the Utes, and during last year’s 51-28 loss to Utah he was one of the Aztecs’ bright spots, bringing in nine catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

If he puts up similar numbers this week, it could spell trouble for the Utes. This year’s group hasn’t been blowing away many opponents and may not be able to overcome another big game like that. Containing Webb will be the clearest way to a Ute victory.
