Run, Pikes, run: PKA fraternity raises money for kids’ cancer camp

By Jessica Fresquez

Members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity ran a football from the U to BYU to raise money for charity and celebrate Rivalry Week.

The annual Kevin B. Kennedy Memorial Game Ball Run is held in honor of former chapter President Kevin Kennedy, who died from cancer.

“It is a fun event where we all have a good time,” said Pi Kappa Alpha member Parker Jones, who helped organize the event.

The money raised during the week goes to Camp Hob, a camp for children currently being treated for cancer and their siblings. The camp is located in Settlement Canyon, just outside Tooele.

This event raises more than a quarter of the camp’s annual budget, said Chris Rowe, Pi Kappa Alpha member.

The run started at 10:30 p.m. the night of Friday, Nov. 18. The Pikes ran the Ute football from Rice-Eccles Stadium to Provo and reached the LaVell Edwards Stadium at BYU around 5 a.m.

The whole fraternity participated-12 members took turns running a certain distance to reach their destination and other members rode in escort trucks that followed as the run took place.

A date auction was also held on Monday, Nov. 14, raising $1,000.

The night of Thursday, Nov. 17, Lumpy’s had a $5 cover charge at the door, the proceeds of which went toward the Pikes’ fund-raising efforts. Inside, a live band played and fraternity members sold cancer awareness bracelets for $2, which entered the person in a raffle to win a prize.

This year, more than 30 sponsors donated money, 10 of which had their logo displayed on banners and T-shirts worn by fraternity members.

Chase Harlin, Pi Kappa Alpha member and organizer of the week’s events, said the group raised $15,000 this year. Since the project began several years ago, the fraternity has raised more than $100,000 for Camp Hob.

Harlin will deliver the check to Camp Hob the week after Thanksgiving.

Pi Kappa Alpha is the camp’s largest donor. Besides donating money, members visit the camp and interact with its children during the summer.
