Tennis

By Tony Pizza

Andrea Maughan made an impressive run through the Wilson/ITA Central Regional Tournament taking place at the Rice-Eccles Tennis Center. The run ended Saturday, in the semifinal consolation match when Maughan fell 5-7, 6-3 (10-1) to Melissa Esposito of Colorado.

On Thursday, Erin Monson upset the No. 9 singles player in college tennis when she dispatched Tulsa’s Thalia Diaz-Barriga. Monson followed up a 6-3 win in the first set with an impressive sweep of the second set, 6-0.

“I can’t say enough about Erin Monson’s performance in singles today, taking out the No. 9 seed,” head coach Mat Iandolo said. “It handily shows the level of tennis she is capable of playing when she stays aggressive.”

Maughan and Monson are just two of Utah’s impressive young team that found success over the Fall Break. The Utes, who feature four seniors, two juniors and five underclassmen, got some good, early-season experience under their collective belt.

“I feel like this was an overall good learning experience for the team,” Iandolo said. “I was impressed with how we did as the host institution for a tournament of this magnitude. It was good to have a tournament of this size on our campus. We learned a lot about what we need to work on for the dual match season, which begins in late January.”
