Confucius Institute hosts Chinese Culture Week

By Drew Thompson, Staff Writer

Today marks the beginning of Chinese Culture Week, an effort by the U Confucius Institute to expand student understanding of China through cultural activities such as films, opera and musical performances, art exhibits and lectures.

The event, which includes activities every day this week, will kick off with a Chinese musical concert at the Dumke Recital Hall in Gardner Hall.

Nominated Chinese speakers will tout their skills in a speech contest Tuesday. The winner will receive a partial scholarship to study abroad in China.

The calligraphy and art of Ma Weihua, who has been considered one of the 10 greatest artists in China, will be on display at the LNCO building Wednesday for students, faculty and staff to view.

University of Tennessee-Knoxville Professor Yang Zhong will give a lecture on “Democratic Values among Chinese Peasantry” on Thursday at 1 p.m.

To finish off the week, the Confucius Institute will show the movie “Shower,” a film about a family-run bathhouse and the struggle of modernization in Chinese culture, in the Tanner Humanities building at 7 p.m. on Friday.
