Diabetes Center hosting 5k fundraiser

By Krista Starker, Staff Writer

The University Health Care Utah Diabetes Center is holding its annual 5K Fun Run and Walk on Saturday, April 11 at 8 a.m., starting at the center, located at 615 Arapeen Dr. in Research Park.

Jill Kittel, manager of the UDC, said 180 people registered last year and the center is expecting about 200 people this year.

The annual event helps to raise money for the center’s Treasure Chest Program, which provides financial assistance to families who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford clinical care and diabetes education.

“The Treasure Chest Program is supported by donor support and has helped many families in Utah with no insurance or those living at the poverty level,” Kittel said.

Last year, the event raised $10,000 and organizers hope to raise even more this year.

The UDC has been helping those with diabetes since 2001, when the center opened. It offers many services to patients, such as diabetic food recipes, medical care, education about diabetes and support groups.
