Newman turned down for Georgia job

By Michael McFall, News Editor

Robert Newman keeps trying, but he can’t seem to leave the U.

Newman, the dean of the College of Humanities, was one of four finalists in the running to become the new provost of the University of Georgia Atlanta. But the university decided to go another route. Last week, UGA President Michael F. Adams chose Jere Morehead, who already works at the university as the vice president for instruction, to fill its second-highest position as provost.

This is at least the sixth time in three years that Newman has been in the running to take a job at a university outside of Utah. Most have been for provost positions, though last spring he was shooting for president at University of Rhode Island.

A search committee was also considering him to become the president of Florida International University last April, but Newman withdrew his name from consideration.
Newman could not be reached for comment.
