Union fire alarm gets tested?twice

By Michael McFall

A janitor’s mistake inconvenienced students and staff Wednesday afternoon.

The Union’s fire alarm went off shortly after 3 p.m. Students and staff filed out of the building but had to stand outside in the brisk fall afternoon for only a few minutes before being let back inside.

Nick Mabey, an undeclared sophomore, said he figured someone had probably pulled the fire alarm.

His guess was close8212;though the Salt Lake City Fire Department sent a truck in case there was a legitimate problem. The culprit was a Union janitor who accidentally bumped into the fire alarm near the north entrance with a cart.

“I was using the computers downstairs when it happened,” Mabey said. He said he didn’t mind the minor inconvenience.

The Union held a fire alarm test Wednesday morning as the final phase of its new sprinkler installment.

“Hey, now we know it really works,” said Whit Hollis, director of the Union.
