Movie Review: “Scorch Trials”

“The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials” picks up right where the first movie left off. The Gladers endured their friends’ deaths, survived the Grievers and escaped the Maze. Now they have face the real world, including their disease-stricken home, the Scorch. Thomas and his friends must outsmart the people who put them in the Maze, overcome zombies infested with the Flare and find those who are still on their side.

This film has received some harsh criticism saying that it did not follow the book closely enough. However, for those who have never read the books, it is just another movie series. That said, when going to the movie, you have to think of its merits as a film separate from the book.

The acting in this film is surprisingly decent. Dylan O’Brien plays a great main character as Thomas. It’s not his best performance, but he is entertaining to watch. Unfortunately, the screenplay messes with the actors a bit. There are lines in the film not intended to be funny but that come off humorous due to the placement and context. While there was action in every scene, the screenplay was cheesy and repetitive. It was also apparent that a certain actor was supposed to stand or walk in a specific position. This gave the film a staged quality that distracted from the story.

While the acting and screenplay could have used a little more work, the element of action will have you jumping out of your seat. This series hones in on the jump scare method, with monsters and machinery popping out everywhere. Just when you think you’re prepared for another sneak attack, you’re proven wrong. The constant need for vigilance keeps this movie entertaining.

Overall, this film is just okay. “The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials” may be a film to wait to watch until it comes to Redbox or Netflix. However, If you are in the mood for a movie that is simple and entertaining, this is a good choice for you.
