Study may aid birth defect knowledge

By disabling its genes, U geneticist Mario Capecchi and postdoctoral fellow Deneen Wellik created a mouse with a rib cage similar to a snake's. The mouse has ribs all the way to the end of its tail. The findings may lead to a better understanding of skeletal birth defects in humans.

It didn't even take the entire day. From 8 a.m. until about 3 p.m. nearly 150 volunteers-including about 20 from the U School of Medicine-were able to build a custom-designed children's playground in the Modesto Park neighborhood on the west side of Salt Lake City.
