Fans come out to meet 2003 Utes

One week before it opens its season with an early season tournament in Tempe, Ariz., the U volleyball team hosted its first official Meet the Team Night this past Friday at the HPER Complex, where the Utes play their home games. The event attracted more than 100 fans, including U President Bernie Machen, who was given a Utah volleyball T-shirt as thanks for his contributions to the program.

The U football team was hardly an offensive juggernaut a season ago. The group that finished seventh in the Mountain West Conference in total offense-and dead last in scoring-struggled to find a consistent passing game last season while rotating starters at quarterback and tailback.

Headline: Legacy Park symbolic of U's role during Olympics On Friday morning, the new Olympic Legacy Park was opened on the south end of campus next to Rice-Eccles Stadium. The park is a gift to the U from the Salt Lake Olympic Committee. The park cost SLOC $13 million to build, and will stand as a reminder of the historic event that took place on campus.

Meet the U volleyball team

The defending Mountain West Conference volleyball champs will make their first appearance of the new season Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Utes' Meet the Team Night. U coach Beth Launiere is using the opportunity to introduce the 2003 team to fans and in hopes of not only garnering added support for the team this year, but also to get people excited for what is expected to be another strong Ute squad.

U TRAX line causes some campus safety concerns

There are approximately 9.7 million TRAX rides given per year in Salt Lake County, and since their debut in 1999, the trains have fatally struck four people. The addition of the new TRAX extension running through campus-scheduled to open on Sept. 29-poses a danger to students and faculty, according to administrators.

U gets $1.9 million for heart study

In attempts to find the reason why obesity causes heart disease complications, U researchers are hoping they might find a cure as well. As more Americans become obese, they develop heart disease which diminishes their quality of life, sometimes taking it altogether.
