Soccer tops Nevada in scrimmage

With the start of the regular season just eight days away, U soccer coach Rich Manning finally got a chance to see his team in action Wednesday afternoon, as the team took on Nevada in a scrimmage at Ute Field.

Taxes, spending and the issue of party stereotypes

Regardless of the issue, the stereotype remains: Liberals are the big spenders and Conservatives are the penny pinchers. Many Americans consider Republicans the fiscally responsible party, frugal at every turn and cautious about all government ventures, fighting to keep recklessly spending Democrats from squandering away America's hard-earned tax dollars.

The unbearable wait is almost over. In less than a week, seven months of pure torture will quickly become a distant memory. A collective sigh of relief will soon be heard from the homes of beer bellies and couch potatoes around the country. Football season is here! Preseason ratings for NFL games are the highest they have ever been.

Men’s hoops sets schedule

As the U men's basketball team is preparing for the upcoming season, returning senior forward/center Tim Frost has been out of the country playing for the NIT All-Star College Select Team in the Bahamas. The team played seven games on its Caribbean tour, including two games against the junior and senior Bahamian national teams, along with games against four club teams.

New IDs needed to ride buses and TRAX for free

Approximately 17,000 U students and faculty ride Utah Transit Authority buses and TRAX trains by simply showing their student ID cards. That may not be the case anymore. Starting in November, students and faculty will need a second card to use the service.

U students find a ‘LINC’ to another world

The Andes Mountains rise to higher than 19,000 feet in parts of Peru, splitting the land into three distinct regions. We're all surrounded by mountains-they set the background at the U at all times-but I was still impressed. Costal cities like Lima are shrouded in a perpetual mist, and the lowlands are home to miles of rain forest, broken by snake-like rivers that carve their way through the jungle.

U researcher gets $2 million in grant money

A researcher at the U announced he has received the largest-ever grant for the study of preventing carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow. The $2 million grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was received by Kurt Hegmann, U research associate professor of family and preventive medicine.

One of a kind

The U is home to the only Materials Science and Engineering program in the state of Utah. Upon entering the program, students choose an area of specialization. Options are broad, said departmental Secretary Mary Anne Davies. "Because MSE crosses over into many other fields, students have a wide range of choices, from medical and dental school, sports research and development and law school," she said.

Want to Become a Ute? After a disappointing year, the U softball team is looking to reload and try to regain its 2002 form, when the team won the Mountain West Conference Championship. In order to round out the roster, the team will hold an open tryout at Ute Field on Aug.
