Letter to the Editor: Standardized Tests Are Still Unfair to Some

By , , , and April 13, 2003
Editor: I found John Morley's April 9 column, "Testing the Way to Scholastic Equality" interesting, but flawed. Morley stated that standardized tests act as a "uniform yardstick by which to measure students." I ask, what students? Is a student who is poor and did not get the opportunities to have the best teachers or tutors part of this? How about those who, like Morley, may have had to work while in school to help pay the rent and could not always get the best grades? What about many racial minorities, for whom English is a second language? Research shows that the groups I mentioned above do not perform as well on these types of tests.

Admit It: The Wage Gap Is Gone

There's an ancient tradition, long upheld by tyrants: killing the messenger for the message. This practice, though barbarous and brutal, isn't without some twisted sense of logic. Letter to the Editor: Where Do You Draw Lines of Life?

Editor: I'm writing in response to the April 11 Chronicle editorial, "Campers Set Good Example for U." They certainly set an example. Offense Progresses in Second Spring Game

By , , , and April 13, 2003
Though the U football team's offense looked much better in its second spring scrimmage than the first, it was still advantage defense on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium. "Offensively, it's starting to resemble an offense...The first scrimmage, I'm not sure what it was," coach Urban Meyer said.

Gymnasts Qualify for 22nd Straight NCAAs

By , , , and April 13, 2003
Competing in one of the toughest regionals in the nation, the U gymnastics team knew it would have to finish the North Central Regionals with a strong showing on the balance beam to secure an NCAA berth, though it was the one event that caused numerous problems all year long.
