Letter to the Editor: Whitley Ignores Pervasive Power

By , , , and March 31, 2003
Editor: I am writing in response to Jared Whitley's inaccurate analysis of National Women's Week on March 27, "Naked Women are Good Enough for Campus Feminists." His comments epitomize the very reasons why events such as National Women's Week are still necessary to foster equality for women.

Sending a Peaceful Message to the Troops

On Jan. 17, 1991, Operation Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm-the United States was officially at war with Iraq. I was in the sixth grade at the time. At 12 years of age, the concept of war seemed overwhelming, and I don't believe my classmates and I understood its ramifications well enough to form a legitimate opinion.

Letter to the Editor: Take Another Look at Women, Whitley

By , , , and March 28, 2003
Editor: I have a few suggestions for Jared Whitley, regarding his March 27 column, "Naked Women are Good Enough for Campus Feminists. First, if you mean your articles to be facetious, please start with a disclaimer. If you intend them to be taken seriously, you should perhaps not make generalizations of large groups based on isolated incidents with few people.

Rewriting the History Books

By , , , and March 28, 2003
There's an ugly part of American history and culture that many are hoping will just disappear if people forget about it. History books often neglect to mention the ugliest and bloodiest parts of history. But what authors and teachers often ignore is that history, if forgotten, will be doomed to repeat itself.

Letter to the Editor: Scholar or Bush Administration Spokesperson?

By , , , and March 28, 2003
Editor: A frequent consultant to the U.S. State Department, Professor Henri Barkey sounded more like the hawks in the Bush administration than an independent scholar in a lecture at the Middle East Center on March 26. The main theme of his talk was that the Turkish parliament's decision to deny the United States the opportunity to set up a northern front in Iraq spelled disaster for Turkish democracy, a view so extreme and rare that it is hardly shared by anyone other than a few neo-conservative ideologues in the Bush administration.
