Gender and Entrepreneurs

By and October 20, 2002
Editor: Once again, the School of Business has advertised its annual Utah Entrepreneur Challenge, and once again, I am disturbed by the wording of the contest. But this time, I am writing to call attention to it. Language is a powerful medium, not least because it encodes the values and beliefs of the culture that uses it.

Letter to the Editor: The Right to Be Offended

By By Youngkeit, Jason and By Youngkeit, Jason October 17, 2002
Editor: I'd like to respond to Dana Robison's Oct. 15 letter to the editor, "Hang Those Rainbow Flags High." In her response to Bart Gatrell's Oct. 14 letter, "Rainbow Flags are Offensive," Robison attacked Gatrell as someone with an "unbelievably bigoted attitude" and even went so far as to say he has a "homophobic lack of attraction for males.

Voters’ Rally a Success

By and October 17, 2002
Student leaders say the U's first ever Rock the Vote celebration was a huge success. As evidence leaders cite: a packed crowd at Kingsbury Hall, Oct. 10, to hear Ralph Nader, 3,000 students who attended an Everclear concert Oct 16, and more than 1,000 voter registration forms filled out by students during the course of the week.

Letter to the Editor: Diversity Has Gone Too Far

By By Guercio, Aaron and By Guercio, Aaron October 17, 2002
Editor: The U focuses on diversity as a key element in quality education. However, though it is true that classes in black history, foreign studies and fine arts do add to the roundness of one's experience, the school has gone too far in its attempts to diversify the student body.

Letter to the Editor: Anti-Gay Argument is Bigoted

By By Roach, James V. and By Roach, James V. October 17, 2002
Editor: Shame on The Chronicle for publishing Bart Gatrell's Oct. 14 letter to the editor, "Rainbow Flags are Offensive." This piece was a glaring example of bigotry. Gatrell suggests that homosexuals have no right to wave their sexual preference in his face.

Pride Week Was a Success

By and October 16, 2002
Editor: Thank you for printing Bart Gatrell's Oct. 14 letter to the editor, "Rainbow Flags Are Offensive." I welcome this as an opportunity to address his arguments. Gatrell began by saying that rainbow flags on campus were "just another example of the minority imposing its view on the majority.

Bart Gatrell’s Final Reply

By [email protected] to the Editor:Yikes!! I had no idea that such a hornets' nest would be stirred up. Maybe we got off on the wrong foot. I thought my little opinion article was reasonable;...

Standing Proud for Gays

By and October 15, 2002
Editor: Jared Whitley, in his Oct. 10 column, "Coming Out of the Opinion Closet" and Bart Gatrell in his Oct. 14 letter to the editor, "Rainbow Flags are Offensive" criticize the "in-your-face" approach they feel Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people take in advertising, and in being who they are.
