Kids That Wanna Have Fun

By and October 13, 2002
My educational philosophy was influenced by a conversation I once had with Hoonjin Jung, a friend of mine from Korea. He said that until recently, Korean schools were very strict. They have a saying: "A king, a teacher and a father are the same." When he first came here he was terrified to comment in class, in part because he was still unsure of his English.

Rainbow Flags Are Offensive

By and October 13, 2002
Editor: What's up with the rainbow flags hung up as part of a gay pride celebration on campus last week? It's just another example of the minority imposing its view on the majority. I don't find a pot of gold at the end of this diversity rainbow. I find a double standard and hypocrisy.

Letter to the Editor: Committed Sex Is Better

By and October 10, 2002
Editor: There has been a discussion recently in letters to the editor about the trend of women to dress in a way that expresses their sexual nature and how this dress objectifies them. Valid points have been made on both sides, but I'd like to point out that people who emphasize sex too much are shooting themselves in the foot.

As college students attend classes every day, they carry the bare necessities: Paper, pens, books and the occasional calculator and exam booklet. I am almost certain the majority of students at the U have never considered a concealed firearm a necessity for college education.

Letter to the Editor: Setting the Socialists Straight

By and October 9, 2002
Editor: It has been a long time since I was a university student, but someone sent me a link to Daniel Thatcher's piece in the Oct. 9 issue of The Chronicle., "Confessions of a Mormon Socialist." In it Thatcher describes his experience as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: "In Estonia, a post-Soviet republic, my black-tagged peers loved to preach how socialism was Satan's plan to bind and ensnare mankind, turning them into brainwashed atheists.
