Twice during the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, U physician Per Gesteland received an automatic alarm signal through his pager. Each time he rushed to check his computer data to see if the page meant there had been a disease outbreak or bioterrorist attack.

ASUU to Produce Monthly Newsletter

In order to better inform students, the Associated Students of the University of Utah plans to create a monthly newsletter designed to inform U students about the inner workings of their student body government. The idea for a monthly newsletter came after ASUU Chief of Staff Heidi Spilker found a sample newsletter from the University of California.

Jameson Ends Career After 12th at NCAAs

Senior distance runner Teren Jameson showed why he was the only U representative at the NCAA Championships in Baton Rouge, La., on June 1, as he finished 12th with a time of 30:04.18 in the men's 10,000 meter run. Jameson received the invitation to the NCAA after finishing first at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Burgess Gets Invite to NBA Draft Camp

When the top pro basketball prospects tied up their shoes at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp starting June 4 in Chicago, Ill., a Ute was among them. Former U center Chris Burgess, who led the 2001-02 Utes in points (13.2) and rebounds (7.2) before he went down with a season-ending torn ligament injury December 29, 2001, was one of the "60 best [prospects] in the world" invited to the camp, he said.

Osimani is Fifth Ute to Leave

Add another name to the list of the departed from the U men's basketball team. Martin Osimani, a back-up point guard during the 2001 02 season who expected to contend for the starting job his sophomore season, became the fifth Ute to leave the team when he announced last week his plans to depart the U program.

Last Memorial Day, as I drove along U.S. Highway 93 on my way to McGill, the small northern Nevada town where I was born, I made a special effort to look around at the rugged desert scenery. Sometimes called "the loneliest road in America," Highway 93 and the isolated sagebrush covered hills surrounding it have become, for me, synonymous with home, family and friends.

Museum Gets Funds For Anasazi Pottery

Artifacts from the area now covered by Lake Powell will no longer clutter storage shelves thanks to a $20,000 grant the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded to the Utah Museum of Natural History. The museum staff unveiled a sample of the hundreds of ceramic vessels excavated prior to the damming of the Colorado and San Juan Rivers during a press conference at the museum Monday.

UTA Removes Trees to Make Room for TRAX

Today there are 140 stumps across campus where, only two weeks ago, large trees stood. Crews have been removing the trees along South Campus Drive, Wasatch Drive and Medical Drive to make elbow room for construction of the TRAX extension that will run from the stadium to the U Hospital.

Machen Gets National Support

President Bernie Machen's defense of the U's no-gun policy has attracted the attention and support of the American Council on Education. In late May, the council announced plans to file a friend of the court brief with the U.S. District Court, claiming the U has a right to ban guns under the constitution that defends freedom of speech and the right to maintain a safe environment.
