Freshmen Geared Up For First Day of School

B.J. Probert wants to graduate as soon as possible. As an entering freshman planning to study sports medicine, Probert's goals are to get a good education and get out. He believes the point of going to college is to launch himself into a good career. But, he also plans on getting involved with many other extra-curricular activities as well.

Utes Make Academic All-MWC Swim Team

Along with the success in the pool the U men's and women's swimming and diving teams have been enjoying throughout the off-season, there is more reason to rejoice. The teams were coming off excellent individual performances at the Mission Viejo and Cottonwood Heights Invitationals during summer competitions.

Academic Criticism Merited if Done Right

When visiting Chinese restaurants as a child, I regularly got the fortune cookie with a slip that read, "You would make a good critic." At a young age, I thought that must be quite true. That's probably in part why I love college so much. I like to take information, turn it over, examine it and critique it.

Letter to the Editor: God is All Over Government

Editor: Casey Jacketta's column in the July 10 Chronicle, titled "Putting God in the Pledge Divides the Nation" summarizes familiar arguments against references to God in the Pledge of Allegiance, which have been renewed with the recent legal case. At the root of all of these arguments is the meaning of the phrase, "separation of church and state.

Pollution Possible Cause of Famine

A new study says pollution from industrial nations was one of the possible causes of a devastating African famine that left 1.2 million people dead. The starvation brought on by the 1970-85 drought stretched from Senegal to Ethiopia until rains finally returned.

Some Players Are Not Destined for NBA Glory

Some guys just aren't meant to make a career in the NBA. When NBA coaches finalize their rosters and the season starts in late October, chances are former Utah Ute Chris Burgess will find himself looking in from the outside. Perhaps it's too early to say, but after watching Burgess put on a Phoenix Suns' uniform and play sparingly against the Memphis Grizzlies in the Rocky Mountain Revue, I just don't think he's going to make it.

Havili Denied Appeal By Univ. Administration

The U administration backed athletic director Chris Hill's decision of denying Sione Havili's petition to join the U football team. U vice president for student affairs Barb Snyder ruled the U student-athlete code and its appeals process didn't apply to Havili, for he was an academic non-qualifier out of high school.
