U Student Arrested For Moon Rock Theft

U student Thad Roberts was charged and arrested for stealing a safe filled with moon rocks and meteorites from the Johnson Space Center in Houston, and then trying to market them, the FBI reported Monday. The arrest comes as a shock to U Physics Professor Richard Price, who taught Roberts in a small, accelerated-learning physics class in spring of 2000.

ATO Fraternity House Will Be In Heritage Commons Locale

Alpha Tau Omega is back on campus after a 50-year absence from the U. A unique deal between ATO and U residential living will place the fraternity into a duplex in the Heritage Commons housing complex. The fraternity will begin to move in August 16. "I've heard a lot of negative stuff about living up there, but it's our home for at least six months to a year, and we finally feel like we're established?it makes it a little easier for us to get a house," according to ATO Treasurer B.

Census Bureau Reports More Income for Educated Citizens

The income gap between the more-educated and less-educated is widening, a report released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows. On average, during an adult's working life, people with professional degrees, like medical and law, will make an average of $4.4 million, compared to a high school graduate's life-time earning average of $1.

Gift Allows Nursing College to Open Research Center

A $1 million gift from the Emma Eccles Jones Foundation will allow the U's College of Nursing to create a new research center. The Emma Eccles Jones Nursing Research Center, to be housed in renovated space on the nursing college's fifth floor, will support graduate study, faculty preparation and clinical nursing research.

Illegal Meds Threaten UT Immigrants’ Lives

A large number of Utah's Latino immigrants are risking their lives by taking an illegal pain reliever, U doctors say. Up to 35 percent of the Latino patients seen at the U's South Main Public Health Center use the drug. A Latino boy, brought to a U clinic with a severe infection in May, led doctors to discover the widespread use.

Union Hires a New Assistant Director

After an academic year of budget cuts and layoffs, the Union is hiring an assistant director. Frank Chacon, from the University of Southern Colorado, will take charge of marketing, recreation and programming on July 30. "Programming is just central to what we do as the community center of the campus, and we need to beef it up," said Whit Hollis, Union director.

Bush Stops $34M for Int’l Family Planning

WASHINGTON?The Bush administration, in a victory for social conservatives who oppose abortion, will withhold $34 million that had been earmarked for U.N. family planning programs overseas. Instead, the money will go to international child survival and health programs of the U.

UTEP Assistant Joins Men’s Basketball Staff

The search for a men's basketball assistant coach to replace top assistant Dick Hunsaker is over. Silvey Dominguez, an assistant coach for the 10-22 Texas-El Paso Miners, was named to the position by Utah coach Rick Majerus last week. "This is a great opportunity for me, and one I felt I couldn't afford to pass up," Dominguez said.

Letter to The Editor: Don’t Separate God and Pledge

Editor: I am writing in response to Casey Jacketta's July 10 column "Putting God in the Pledge Divides the Nation". Although there are some people who are in favor of taking "under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance, it is certainly not as divisive an issue as she would have us believe.
