The Chronicle’s View: U Campus Must Stay on TRAX

It's 8:00 a.m. and the parking lot next to the business school is already packed full. Students wait in their cars for what could be an hour, hoping for a car to leave its stall. Come fall, this situation will seem all too familiar to U students. Some of these students might want to consider whether the wait for a spot beats waiting for trains on the Utah Transit Authority's TRAX line.

USU Creates Graduation Guarantee Program for Fall

Utah State University administrators shocked higher education officials with the announcement of a guarantee for entering freshman: Graduate in four years or tuition is free. Beginning Fall Semester at USU, students enrolled in the Graduation Guarantee Program will sign a contract, agreeing to take so many hours a semester with the promise that in four years they will be wearing a cap and gown.

India May Have Removed Troops

JAMMU, India?In what could be a significant reduction of war readiness, the Indian army has withdrawn three strike divisions?about 18,000 men?from the Pakistan frontier, high-ranking army and government officials said Tuesday. The Defense Ministry denied the movements, however, and India's deputy prime minister made a bellicose speech to Parliament, claiming India's right to all of the disputed region of Kashmir.

WASHINGTON?Pentagon leaks of military secrets to news organizations are hurting the war on terrorism and endangering American lives, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told senior officials. In an internal memo, Rumsfeld lamented a "damaging lack of professionalism we continue to see on a daily basis," referring to a willingness of some defense officials to provide classified information to reporters.

As a speaker at the Salt Lake Unitarian Church, he joins the likes of Langston Hughes, U Law School Dean Scott Matheson and six candidates for Salt Lake City mayor, among others. "In 1999 we received national coverage from Time magazine for the mayoral speakers," said Tim Chambless, chair of the church's Sunday Summer Forum speaker series.

New Hydrogels Help Wounds Heal Faster

New hydrogels developed by U medical researchers appear to heal wounds much faster than other therapies. If the hydrogels work as well in people as they do in mice, this new therapy will offer new hope for millions of elderly people, burn victims, diabetics and surgical patients.

ASUU Finance Director Resigns

The Associated Students of the University of Utah's Executive Cabinet is one member short following the resignation of its finance director. Ryan Wilson was in his second year as director of the Finance Board before stepping down earlier this month. "It was the hardest decision I ever had to make, and I regret it, but it was time for me to move on," Wilson said.

Petitioners Want Signatures OK’d

SALT LAKE CITY?Organizers of a petition drive to hike taxes on radioactive waste disposal asked the Utah Supreme Court to throw out a portion of the statute that invalidated more than 91,000 signatures for the November ballot initiative. Six initiative sponsors and activists filed a petition of extraordinary writ with the state Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Woman, Children Killed in Shooting

HUDSON OAKS, Texas?A woman and her three children were killed and her estranged husband was wounded Tuesday in a shooting at their upscale home in a small town near Fort Worth. Police Chief Ray Riley wouldn't say whether the case was being treated as a murder-suicide, or if the wounded man was a suspect.

Five-Year-Old Girl Abducted in So. Cal

STANTON, Calif.?Police on Tuesday searched for a 5-year-old girl who was abducted kicking and screaming outside her apartment by a man who drove up and asked for help finding his dog. The girl's mother, Erin Runnion, wept as she pleaded for the return of her daughter, Samantha, who was snatched Monday evening from a road inside the apartment complex 25 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
