7 Countries Named Terrorist Sponsors

WASHINGTON?The State Department branded Iran and six other countries as promoters of terror on Tuesday in a report shadowed by "the horrific events of Sept. 11." While Iran intensified its support last year for Palestinian militants, Sudan and Libya took some steps "to get out of the terrorism business" and North Korea and Syria made limited moves to cooperate in the international campaign against terror, the department said in its 22nd annual report to Congress.

Powell Reconsiders Aid to Yugoslavia

WASHINGTON?Yugoslavia has met U.S. criteria for cooperating with the U.N. war crimes tribunal, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday, opening the way for a resumption of U.S. assistance. Powell's announcement means that $40 million in frozen assistance can be released and that the administration is free once again to support Yugoslav loan requests in the World Bank and other international lending institutions.

Terrorists May Target New York Landmarks

NEW YORK?The FBI warned city officials Tuesday that it had received uncorroborated information that terrorists had made threats against the city, police said. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly characterized the information as "general threats." A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity said city landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty were potential targets.

Downwinders Cancer Study Funding at Risk

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is refusing to fund additional work by the U's Joseph Lyon, whose two earlier studies linked fallout from U.S. atomic testing to leukemia and other illnesses. The agency promises to provide money only through this year, the last year of its five-year research contract with the U.

K-UTE Retains Two Percent of ASUU Funding

On May 9, the Associated Students of the University of Utah's new Student Senate and Assembly maintained K-UTE's 2 percent portion of the student activity fee. Representatives held the meeting following a weekend hearing at the ASUU Supreme Court that overturned an earlier vote to cut the station's funding.

U Professor Appointed to District Court

U law professor Paul Cassell will serve as a District Court Judge for the District of Utah after the United States Senate confirmed him on May 13. Though the Senate voted Cassell through to serve on the United States District Court, the 20 votes against him mark the largest number of votes against a candidate of any of Bush's 57 judicial nominees so far.

Business Bureau Director Dies of Pancreatic Cance

Professor Thayne Robson, director of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research at the School of Business, died May 13 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 72. "Thayne's passing is a great loss to the U and to the state of Utah. He has been a valued adviser to governors, legislators and the business community on economic matters for decades.

Machen, Parking Services Face Lawsuit

Naming U President Bernie Machen both professionally and personally as well as other U officials, a Salt Lake woman filed a lawsuit against the U, saying that the U failed to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. When Mandi Maree Shaw attended a gymnastics meet in mid-March, she said that handicapped parking places weren't located in the closest lot to the arena as required by federal legislation.

State Budget Woes Promise Additional Tuition Increases

U administrators said students will almost inevitably face a second tuition increase before the beginning of Fall Semester. Dave Pershing, senior vice president for academic affairs, said that a tuition increase in addition to the 9.3 percent increase announced in March is "probably 100 percent likely.

U student Keval Patel, died May 23, after classmates found him unconscious shortly before 8 p.m. in the HPER Complex dive pool the evening of May 22. The 23-year-od Patel, who was studying pre-biology and was an Airman at Hill Air Force Base, was swimming qualifying laps for scuba diving certification.
