U Creates New Shuttle Routes

Due to TRAX construction on South Campus Drive, campus transit has reorganized the U's shuttle routes. "We've been talking about changing shuttle routes since the Olympics, but have only made minor adjustments before now," said Ken Searles, manager of campus transit.

Budget’s Shortfall Estimates Revised

SALT LAKE CITY?New tax revenue estimates show that lawmakers will have to trim $138 million from the 2002 budget, instead of $157 million, during Wednesday's special legislative session. State budget director Lynn Ward said the previous $155 shortfall figure for both years was an indication of tax revenues, not an actual estimate.

Dept. of Energy Gives U Institute $4.5M for Geothermal Research

The U's Energy & Geoscience Institute will receive a $4.5 million boost from the U.S. Department of Energy to aid their five-year, $12 million effort to boost electric power production at Coso geothermal field in California. Located at the edge of Death Valley in southern California, the Coso geothermal field is jointly operated by the U.

Business Research Director Dies of Pancreatic Cancer

Professor Thayne Robson, director of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research at the School of Business, died May 13 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 72. "Thayne's passing is a great loss to the U and to the state of Utah. He has been a valued adviser to governors, legislators and the business community on economic matters for decades.

Hinckley Endowment Provides British Study Abroad Opportunity

Twenty-three U students are in England studying Shakespearean theater because of a newly created endowment in the name of Gordon B. Hinckley, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From May 11 to June 1, these students will study at Regent's College in central London as part of a British studies program established last year.

Leavitt Gives Professor Emerita Art Award

U Professor Emerita was selected by Gov. Mike Leavitt as one of six recipients of this year's Governor's Awards in the Arts. Selected from a pool of 70 applicants, Holt received her recognition for her service as an arts educator. As a faculty member of the U theatre department for 32 years, Holt directed junior high and high school drama festivals at the U.
